A clip round the ear

Not sure how many of you have young family, but do you hit your children when they miss-behave, or use alternative punishments, i.e. No TV, grounding them etc....

Which works best?
Is it right to hit children?

When I was young, and I did something wrong, it'd normally end up with a slap, or sometimes a few..depending on what mischief I got upto.

I said I would but never have

it's such a sensitive subject. I was a few times as a kid but only when I did something properly dangerous or extreme and still think (know) I deserved it now.

It's like anything, in moderation and only in certain circumstances I don't think it's wrong but some would abuse (pun not intended) and excuse hitting when it's actual abuse and very wrong.

For example, if I saw some kid push another kid into traffic and his mum screamed at him and slapped him hard I would honestly call that good parenting.

.........................

Hard to argue that.

IMO you need to know what the fine line is between educating your child from right and wrong and abuse.

Luckily I have never had to raise my hand to neither of my kids.

I haven't either

But I think scenarios exist where it wouldn't be wrong

they're very few, but they're there

I smacked my daughter a few times, felt really bad afterwards and have not intention of doing it again, my daughter is very very headstrong.

Never smacked my son and hopefully never will.

You felt bad after smacking her, yet have done it a few times? I'd be worried if that was me.....

I'd be more worried if he didn't feel bad.I hate punishing my children, but if needs must. I bet most on here have been smacked by their folks, does that make them bad parents?

But he smacks her, then feels bad, but still does it again. Then he says he has no intention of doing it again. I may be reading it completely wrong, but doesn't seem like he's in full control of his emotions when he does it ie loses his temper. Like I said, it would worry me.

received many beatings as a kid, now 21, but tbh it made me respect my parents even more. I come from that culture of discipline where what your parents say goes. So if my parents say something, it;s better to listen than not too. Fair to say that my parents are the most important people to me.

I came from the same type of family, I probably got a clout on a weekly bases. Even as an adult and a father of 4,I still hold my parents opinion higher than anyone else. I show my folks far more respect than my neighbours kids, who's parent refuse to use physical punishment.

was made to write out the whole Liverpool history book from front to back.

That is no punishment for a Liverpool fan...

It was, as I wanted to be playing computers or playing football, not writing non stop for hours.

Not sure about some of the generic, sweeping comments made here 'violence breeds violence', 'physical punishment should never be used'. Why? Will a parent who smacks a naughty child once automatically make that child a violent physcopath?

My parents smacked me when I was small, and they're still the two most important people in my life. I'm not violent at all, have had a good education and in general am grateful for a very good upbringing. My parents have done a great job bringing up me and my brother and I don't see why other morally pretentious people would feel the need to judge my parents' parenting skills based on the fact I did get smacked when I was naughty as a child. Blind view.

If violence breeds violence then we'd all be smacking our kids because most of us got a crack or two from our folks.
