Last season's World Cup the best ever?

It's almost a year since Brazil 2014 and for the life of me I can't think of a better world cup. This might be because I've only seen 5 or 6 but honestly, the atmosphere last year was incredible.

I really think some of the knockout matches made us forget just how amazing some of the group stage games were. And the knockouts themselves were actually amazing, the 7-1 obviously, but some of the games involving the USA, Costa Rica, Chile and Colombia the knockouts were great to watch. So many amazing storylines, a lot of players and teams either made a name for themselves or flopped bigtime.

I don't think there's been a better world cup, and I think we might not get one like it until 2026 at the earliest :/. Russia and Qatar have politics hanging over them, the former should get over it, but there was something really special about it being in Brazil that can't be matched, to be fair.

What are some of your favourite memories from Brazil 2014? And was it the best ever? Don't say italia 90, massively overrated nostalgia fest

82 or 86

They just seemed to be more of a magical thing to a young Felix. Most WCs since have been a bit dull in the main.

Seriously?? 2014 was one of the worst for me, the groups had goals but the knockouts were really boring apart from 2 or 3 games. teams were scared to lose and apart from James and maybe Robben can't think of another attacking player that had a stand out tournament, also crazy that Messi got player of the tournament!

Were people really that suprised at the Brazil - Germany game?

Brazil had been absolutely garbage, fluking there way through the early stages. Germany put them back in their place, exactly how everyone from my memory expected them too.

2002 was a great tournament for me. Papa Bouba Diop giving Senegal a win against the holders in the opening game, Beckhams penalty vs Argentina, that goal from Ronaldinho... that dive from Rivaldo! Germany thumping Saudi Arabia 8-0. A ridiculous referee performance with Italy vs either Japan or South Korea, in fact i think every game Korea had there was shocking refereeing decisions.

All capped off by a timeless Ronaldo performance in the final.

Don't think many 2014 knockout games will be remembered as great matches. Maybe Brazil v Chile, that is about it.
Really was quite boring bar the Brazil collapse, which while highly amusing was hardly a classic World Cup knockout fixture.

I seem to be going senile here, but I can't remember this supposedly great Euro 2000 at all!

yh Euro 2008 was good. Emergence of Villa as Raul's successor (think he got top scorer despite not playing in the knockout stages). Again, the Netherlands were good. Russia impressed, as did Turkey/Croatia/Czech etc.

Euro 2012 was poor. Szczesny got sent off in that opening game and that was as good as it got. Did Shevchenko score? I think he scored once and that was fun. Sweden-England were alright in the groups. Glen Johnson England's best player. Milner not one for the big stage. Carroll and Welbeck was working well and then they brought in Rooney and he was too short to head the ball. Think everyone got a bit bored of Spain until they dismantled Italy in the final. Pirlo was star of the tournament but in the final it became clear just how well Spain's midfield could control a game.

98 for me!!!

So many international super powers with great players.

Holland
Brazil
Argentina
Italy
France
England
Germany

Those 7 countries especially were involved in some crackers and had great players throughout their squad

2006 WC was the best World Cup I ever watched. I thought it was a solid WC from the start to finish. 2014 WC was boring, not that boring but a bit on that side.It had the potential to be the best ever but it died quickly.

Euro 2008 is another great tournament I enjoyed. Probably my favourite tournament ever. I still remember most of the games in my head. It was that good.
