Taibi sprang to mind too. Yeah I remember him playing that game and looking very dodgy but at the same time making a few important saves/punches and we won so it covered up his mistakes a bit. The real howler was 2 games later against Saints.

Are you staying over with him?

Romero is a lot more experienced to handle the pressure than Johnston though if its a case of being thrown in for the first game of the season, he did recently play in the WC final.

But he might not be able to communicate with any of his players which is a huge deal. He's probably still not met half the squad yet.

This DDG situation has been handled awfully. Truly abysmally. I'd tell Madrid to fluck off now and tell DDG he's going nowhere for another 12 months.
He's clearly got his head on a move back home and that's fair enough. But we shouldn't be on the eve of the new season with this happening. We should have given Madrid a dealine of mid July to complete the deal and then bought lloris.
Shambles if he leaves now. Absolutely clueless from our point of view.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What? That's not the way to handle this situation at all.
You don't say "Madrid want our player, so he's bound to go". You say "Madrid want our player. Big effing deal" and then you carry on with contract negotiations. If De Gea isn't interested in negotiating at that stage, you say;
"OK, but we won't sell you this summer because you're a key part of our plans and we wouldn't get your worth with only 1 year left. So you're going to stay and play for us this season and if you decide running down your contract is what you'd like to do, we'll buy your replacement this summer and ease them into the team over the season. The club want you to know that we believe you're one of the the best goalkeepers in the world, and intend to offer you a new contract for you to stay here for many years to come and make you a major part of our future."
Then you follow through with that, playing De Gea and his potential replacement (Romero - at least in the short term) during the season at different times, like De Gea in the league and Romero in the cups and champions league. And if De Gea doesn't change his mind, fair enough. We part on good terms and let him go to whichever club he likes. If he does change his mind, we sign up arguably the best goalkeeper in the world for 5 more years.
Money is not an issue to Manchester United. It's not relevant. Getting a fee for De Gea doesn't matter. What does matter is that we handle the situation how we want to, and how benefits us the most. You can't control if a player wants to move back to his home City, but accepting just anything for him instead of what we value him at makes us look much weaker than keeping De Gea, playing him and having him win us points, while also blooding a replacement for him at the same time if he does go. We can then bring in someone else in January and have 3 good goalkeepers, and see what happens then.
Money isn't useful to Manchester United and won't change our fortunes. David De Gea is and potentially would. Therefore, keep De Gea and handle the situation in a manner befitting our best interests over the course of the season. It's not difficult.

^^^ The selling De Gea and then buying Lloris after part is what I meant btw. I've worded that post horribly
