After the complaints of the new qualifying format I thought I'd revisit an idea I had a few weeks ago when the overhaul was first mentioned.
In my mind, I thought this would make for a good qualifying format.
Basically, one driver is sent out to complete one flying lap, after he returns to the pits, another driver is sent out, when he comes in, another comes out and so on until every driver has set a timed lap.
This process is then repeated until every driver has 3 timed laps on the board.
The fastest lap is taken from each driver and the grid order is decided from there.
Pros:
- Every driver is guaranteed a completely clear track to set their times on.
- Every car is guaranteed the same tv coverage.
- Every driver gets completely free reign over choice of tyres to start the race on, as everyone gets 3 sets of ultra-softs to be used only for qualifying.
Cons:
- Only one driver on track at a time could get boring.
- Could be anti-climactic if the pole lap ends up being set really early in the first round
- Could lead to one team monopolising the front row of the grid (narrows eyes at Mercedes)
Sometimes when I get bored I find myself thinking of what I'd do if I was in charge of F1. This is one of those things.
An idea for a new qualifying format

Simple.
Keep this new format for Q1 and Q2.
Revert to last year's format for Q3.
Anything wrong with that?

Surely the simplest option is to ban radio communication between the driver and his team, get rid of the timings from the driver's steering wheel etc. so they have no idea how good or bad their lap time was. This will surely force them to stay out, would it not?

Screw all that. No qualifying needed.
Fit banana skin dispensers, turbo mushrooms and green shells that you can fire out of the cars at each other. Move the tracks to different zones like farm yards, underwater sections, a rainbow coloured track in space. Reduce the race to 3 laps. Allow gorillas, fat dragons and Italian plumbers to enter.
Let them fight out like that. Would be much more interesting.

Scrap qualifying entirely, apart from the season opener and set grid positions based on finishing position in the previous race - perhaps in reverse order to encourage more overtaking

Qualifying would be longer than than the race using your format OP

Yeah that was one thing I was worried about.
I guess the best option would be to try and have them overlap.
Eg - driver 2 starts his out lap when driver 1 starts his in lap.
