Been some great ones over the years, but here's who I think are the 5 best

5. Lilian thuram
4. Philip lahm
3. Cafu
2. Javier zanetti
1. Paolo maldini

There just doesn't seem to be as many top quality fullbacks around anymore. Same with centre backs I guess.

Anyone I've missed?

Maldini the best of all. Ashley Cole so average.
Antonio Cabrini of Juve was a top left back

Cafu amazed me everytime I saw him play. He had the best engine I've ever seen. One minute he'd be bombing down the line whipping a cross in, the next he'd be tackling in his own box. And he did that the whole game.

Yeah Cafu for me was superb. Met him too in Johannesburg in 2010, seemed like a nice bloke.

I loved Anyukov the Russian right back from a few years back. Thought he was an excellent player.

Ivanovic may be up there for most solid full back of the PL era, being a CB who was very good at RB...its a shame he cant play football anymore
