The general role of a full back has changed a lot over recent years. Defending is now a secondary job of a full back.
Cafu is the only one in your list who is arguably better known for attacking, but was still very strong defensively.

Now it is pretty much a deeper lying winger role!

Very true dj, fullbacks did used to seem a lot better at doing both jobs though, now they tend to attack and defending is an after though. Back then they weren't quite as good at attacking but they still contributed going forward whilst being much better defensively.

Always thought Andreas Brehme was top quality. When I mention him on here I usually get negative responses, so it seems I am in the minority. But I would have him in my top 5.

I dont understand the Lahm love in, Quality player but just seems a tidy ball playing full back, was never that quick or strong. But won lots obviously, but never saw him dominate a game defensively or offensively. Bar that game in the world cup/euros.

Maldini and Cafu probably 1 and 2, but total package must ashley cole must be up there, most solid full back i've seen defensively and bombed up and down.

Most FA cups ever if im correct, 4 league titles and whatever else he'd won.

How can you get negative comments on Brehme?! The guy was great, two footed, a very good defender, great going forward and took a very good set piece. Capped 90 odd times for Germany and played for an outstanding Inter team.

Dunno. Probably because he is a German.

Yeah, Ashley Cole is up there. Top class domestically and internationally.
Soemtimes we cannot let club rivalry go to acknowledge quality English players.

Phil Neal was great for us. An attacking full back in the days before attacking full backs.
Used to love Pat Van Den Hauwe at Everton too - hard as nails.

I always thought Lizarazu was as good as Thuram but it was Thuram that got all the plaudits. Lizarazu was a top LB in my opinion.

Zambrotta was pretty good as well but probably didn't have the longevity of the others mentioned.

Zambrotta didnt have longevity? huh?

and lizarazu was quality.

The 90s were quality, robbie carlos was underrated as an entire package too(his free kicks were woeful though generally)
