Sterling

Absolutely has to start at the euros. I'm well aware he's had a very poor 6/7 months for us. Albeit he's been injured for about 2 months

He has undoubtedly acquitted himself better than anyone else across the 3 games. I am by no means arguing he has been brilliant but I struggle to find someone who has played as well as him over all 3

Of course someone may rashford or Rooney or maybe Danny rose. But rashford played 60 minutes and wasn't particularly great other than a very good finish. I thought Rooney was very very good against Australia for the time he played but thought he was very poor tonight. Consistently tried to make early crosses of which none came off

The first 65 minutes today was depressing, very little pace, a worrying lack of width, and for these reasons, despite a poor season for us, sterling has to start v Russia. You cannot overlook a talent like sterling based on a poor season under a managers philosophy which Severely detriments his game

Queue the abuse...

The press have found there next saviour of English football and basically the England team will be renamed the rashford team just as they did with Rooney.

How can we have a team when the press make it all about one player.

And managers pick players on popularity not ability.

Drinkwater being ommited so we could shoehorn Rooney into midfield and bring rashford to the tournament was a prime example of this.

As was the selection of Jack whilshere who's hardly kicked a ball all season.

Your permanent persecution complex aside, i agree with a lot of your points.

However, it is patently obvious if Wilshere is fit, he has to start. He is comfortably, and by some distance, England's best midfielder. He would bring much-needed brio to our pedestrian play.

There's a difference between fit and match fit.

Interesting. If took more than a perfunctory glance at my text, you'd see i put in the proviso of fitness. Nonetheless, by those parameters, Wilshere is in a pretty similar boat to Sterling; and like Sterling, he also has been one of the better performers at the friendlies.

Yet you accord leeway to one and not to the other.

This is the kind of infantile partisan nonsense that afflicts this board- especially during internationals.

I too believe Sterling should start or at least be involved significantly in each match as i do Wilshere - because as it is obvious to one blessed with the gift of sight, they are needed in this set-up.

Sterling has performed well in the champions league this season where as Whilshere hasn't kicked a ball in a meaningful game all season.

Sterlings last three games have had three assists for goals also.

I would have dropped Rooney and brought Drinkwater instead.

Nothing partisan or infantile about anything I have said, just an opinion, so why does it irk you so.

It's more the person saying it than what the person said I think.

No comparison in the roles they play either
Wilshire can play the Brian Robson roll and link up the midfield and attack
We don't have anyone else centrally who can do that job as effectively as Wilshire
If anywhere near fit he should be one of the first names on the team sheet

Thing is they will end up shoving Rooney in that role.

Even Roy isn't that silly. It would be a sackable offence if he did thus.
