And not one mention from that kn_0b Hoddle about his assist tonight, also big mistake not taking Townsend, probably instead of Henderson.
Completely agree monton. The only thing tonight highlighted was a worrying lack of width and that makes leaving Townsend out criminal
The problem is Hodgson, like the World Cup, ends up succumbing to media pressure every time. He's done it already in his squad selection and will do with his team as well.
The selection tonight was all wrong, we started looking a bit better after the changes. Nice to see Manchester assisting Manchester tonight though
But I feel like hodgson was actually under more media pressure not to start sterling in the first game v turkey, which was his worst performance in terms of impact from the 3 then under increased pressure not to start him v Australia where he was clearly our best player. So it was very surprising that he didn't start tonight but his performance from the bench has to guarantee him a start v Russia
It's not the media pressure in terms of individual friendlies, it's shoehorning in players in completely the wrong position or going with something that hasn't worked at club level all season anyway.

If he's going to shackle the free sprinted running of Vardy he might as well not be on the pitch
This squad under a manager who isn't a dinasaur could go quite far in the euros, sadly that won't happen
Exactly. Why even play him?
I thought the same with Drinkwater the other day and the decision not to take him. He would have served a far better purpose than Rashford.
Those Manc United journalist want Rashford in the squad.

Seems incredibly short sighted not to have someone like Andy Carroll as a plan B off the bench instead
It's a squad to satisfy the media rather than any actual footballing decisions being made
Carroll would get pulled up for a foul every single time the ball would be played into him. His game is based on strength and bullying. See how crouch was effective with refs at major tournaments?
TBH I can see the logic in going for younger players, especially with the current England squad. Our senior players are nothing special so building a team for the next couple of tournaments might not be a bad idea.
As to the main point of the article I agree, I do quite like Sterling one of our very few pacey attacking midfielders with any level of talent. He's very good at making things happen the one major flaw is when he's the one who needs to pull the trigger.
Especially with Welbeck out, who is a big loss IMO, it's telling that the next best player we had similar(ish) to Sterling was Townsend.
Rashford got more mentions than Sterling last night despite not even being on the pitch.
Maybe ITV had a say in the squad selection.
The press have found there next saviour of English football and basically the England team will be renamed the rashford team just as they did with Rooney.
How can we have a team when the press make it all about one player.
And managers pick players on popularity not ability.
Drinkwater being ommited so we could shoehorn Rooney into midfield and bring rashford to the tournament was a prime example of this.
As was the selection of Jack whilshere who's hardly kicked a ball all season.
TBH It's just a bit like Walcott all those years ago, except he does actually offer something whereas Walcott was simply there for the experience.
The level of interest and enthusiasm is because he's new and shiny and just about made it come squad selection time.
Also in fairness to Wilshere he stands out as England's best midfielder, if he's close to being fit you take him.
Hodgson is already showing signs of ruining what is a promising set of youngsters. He should have been dumped after the Brazil world cup, along with Rooney. Whilst those two are around England have zilch chance of ever progressing.
Hodgson even had the cheek to come on national TV last night and say England played well, when the whole performance from start to finish was woefully bad.
What was evident to me was that Sterling may be better suited to being a creator than an out and out winger.
Pep, take note.

Your permanent persecution complex aside, i agree with a lot of your points.
However, it is patently obvious if Wilshere is fit, he has to start. He is comfortably, and by some distance, England's best midfielder. He would bring much-needed brio to our pedestrian play.
There's a difference between fit and match fit.

Interesting. If took more than a perfunctory glance at my text, you'd see i put in the proviso of fitness. Nonetheless, by those parameters, Wilshere is in a pretty similar boat to Sterling; and like Sterling, he also has been one of the better performers at the friendlies.
Yet you accord leeway to one and not to the other.
This is the kind of infantile partisan nonsense that afflicts this board- especially during internationals.
I too believe Sterling should start or at least be involved significantly in each match as i do Wilshere - because as it is obvious to one blessed with the gift of sight, they are needed in this set-up.
Whilshere games played this season sterling games played.
No comparison.
Sterling has performed well in the champions league this season where as Whilshere hasn't kicked a ball in a meaningful game all season.
Sterlings last three games have had three assists for goals also.
I would have dropped Rooney and brought Drinkwater instead.
Nothing partisan or infantile about anything I have said, just an opinion, so why does it irk you so.
It's more the person saying it than what the person said I think.
