Ashcroft isn't it. One of the three guys charged with finding the manager. Him, Glenn and someone else. They're the ones who believe the system in place is fine, it just needs the right manager. they want to see the same style of football and formation applied throughout the england ranks so as there is a philosophy and level of consistency. Roy was meant to be the yes man who would implement that vision.

The idea of having a single philosophy that players have to fit into is a silly one if you ask me.

Should suit the players. Teams that do well at international are quite simply always well drilled. England didn't have a formation or any idea who was in the xi or what sort of formation it was going to be going into the tournament. Big Sam would've done better than Roy anyone, he'd have his ideas and stick with them you'd think.

That set up is kind of rigid and idealistic. Naturally, in Scotland, we have these debates before every tournament starts but how is playing one formation for every age group going to make players more tactically aware?

Football's already moved on from the Spanish blueprint. By the time you see players coming out of that set up, you're 10 years behind again. The Germans set up a system in their own style and even though Low sets his team up similar to Spain tactically, it's not just a carbon copy. France & Portugal are seeing the results of their set ups now too.

Everyone needs their own plan because how you play football is linked to the footballing culture of the country. So England aren't all of a sudden going to start playing possession football. On the other hand though you need to be comfortable on the ball, but direct football doesn't need to be the boring hoofball of Allerdyce.

yeah, maybe I typed a bit in haste without reviewing. I don;t believe it's one rigid formation, rather one football philosophy across the various age groups. So this could be a set of tactics and formations to produce a certian identity to english football, and ultimately the players will slot into that as they move through the youth team ranks.

Either way, Klinsmann is proving he can't hack it as a manager.

So I'd love england to appoint him

But what football philosophy is really going to bring England joy? Couldn't see England having success playing the tiki taka of Spain, expansive football of Germany. More the counter attack style of Jose Mourinho or contain style LVG played that I could see doing well for them.

There are a lot of things I never thought I'd see in my lifetime in sport...Chelsea winning the league and CL to name but two...

But our national side winning a major tournament I fear will be the one I'll not see...unless there is a root and branch change in attitude and thinking at the top...and this will be the problem

I fear that this may be a reality....dunno..maybe he is the right man...I know he's always been quite up to date on a lot of things...(a lot more than Roy probably)

The difference is that Moyes was taking over the English champions. If Fergie was backing Big Sam to take over at Germany I would agree with your comparison.

Fergie is backing a decent manager, who's specialist level is lower end premier teams, teams who on their day can perform amongst the top table but are a clear level or two below them.

That is England's level. It is a sensible recommendation.
