We were the only English team to win this weekend who competed in Europe midweek. And we played Thursday in Istanbul and had longest trip of anyone.
Credit to the team. We weren't up against much today it has to be said but i think it shows just how often the top clubs drop pts after European fixtures. It happens more than you think.
Top 4 race isn't over for us obviously but because of our start I think we have to be realistic and keep one eye on the Europa league too. We're not doing great in the group but we're only a pt off top spot. All we have to do is sneak through and by February hopefully we'll be a more fluent team.
The European effect......

Never heard SAF complain about playing europe, is that not the reason why UTD spent millions building a big squad?
It is an advantage, but surley utd spending 90 million on the most exspensive player should also be an advantafe

I said this morning the top 2 by the end of the day will both be clubs with no European football. In such a competitive league it makes a big difference, just look at our last 3 seasons and the 2 time we did make top 4.

Exactly. It's a freak occurence that two very good teams in Chelsea and Liverpool will enter a PL season with no European distractions.

For one of the title challengers with Europe to win the title I think would be a heck of an achievement this season, given the advantage Liverpool and Chelsea have, although I suppose if they progressed far in the cups while the European teams went out early it could change the dynamic.

Totally agree. I can see a cahnge of approach from managers in the future, where they will now aim to win the league every other season, and if they are in europe they will aim to finish outside the european spots, so that they win a league title every two years

In Fergie's years there was never this degree of competition for a title. If you consider two of the teams he finished above from the top 4 being out of Europe, it's hard to imagine you'd get the same outcome.

Its not tiredness particularly imo what the problem is. Its the lack of preparation in between games where teams fall down.
Chelsea and Liverpool get a full week normally to work on their teams, whilst European teams get a couple of days or so. Europa League teams probably get less than their CL counterparts in many occasions, e.g. United playing Thursday night, getting back early Friday morning. Friday is reduced to a recovery day, whilst there is just Saturday perhaps to work on the team against Swansea - and even then travel might have to be incorporated. Similar for any CL teams playing Weds-Sat, although that didn't happen this weekend.

It's always been an issue for all clubs. I can remember under Ferguson our record in games directly after a CL were clearly worse than our average.

Tbf it may have been down to the fact that the players failed to put it any effort whatsoever during the European tie so there really was no reason for them to be tired against Swansea.
