On the back of an article on top 4 clubs ever employing an English manager again, the comments raised the question in my mind of how the England team are fairing. That article spilled over into the appointment of Southgate, an English manager who has never managed a top club, and Bobby Robson.
Since Bobby was England manager we have been in fairly steady decline to the point where we no longer even hope that England could win an international tournament. Sir Bobbys record in 1986 was QFs and 1990 SF's. The PL started in 1992. Since then the best we have done is QFs in 2002 and 2006 under Eriksson. The players then would have been youth players before the PL started so still had that "English game" influence. The players now have never known anything other than the PL era. A lot of the coaches were brought up in that era though.
Earlier this year there was an article I read somewhere that said that the PL clubs like to get youngsters in by the age of 8 or 9 and spend their whole lives under the training of the established clubs to be indoctrinated how to play and conduct themselves. Its hard to break into this at an older age. I think this set up in the PL is killing the England team. It favours kids who mature early and excludes late bloomers who could be better players. It is this aspect of the PL that I think is weakening the England team and why it took 20 years for the influence of the PL on the England team to fully materialise. But it could just be coincidence.
Has the PL harmed the England team?

Only to you.
If you are going to insult someone, it doesn't have any effect if they don't know what you are on about.
If I were to call you a rake, or a shovel or a scythe, for example, wouldn't you find it a bit odd being referred to as a garden implement. You certainly wouldn't take it as an insult.

No.
But the England team have definitely harmed the Premiership. The sooner it becomes all out foreign, the better.

IMO the issue here firmly resides with the clubs.
1. In other countries (germany for example) club have very good structures that ensure that proper development of players and coaches occurs
2. in other countries there is a large resentment of sugar daddy owners and their FAs do not alllow the gold and sullivans or venky' or 100 owners of portsmouth etc etc.
3. in other countries players actually work to become coaches properly.
so.......... england has basically abandoned the work required over the long term to develop english coaches and players. its easier to buy in talent.
so the numbers of english players and managers drop.
there is another point on early bloomers. If you went to barca before cruyff went back there they did too. the iniestas were being ignored. In england pace and power is favoured constantly. ENgland have no no 10.
Wayne rooney is not nor never was a no 10. he is a no 9 and a power player. mata is a no 10.

We are nowhere near as successful as Uruguay.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In my head I thought they'd won the WC once in 1930, just looked at their honours as a nation
Two WC's and 15 Copa America's, Uruguay sh*t all over England
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In fairness, if England were in South America I think you could've won at least 2 of those too.
