BBC Reports:
"New fiver: Bank of England looking to make note meat-free"

Any vegans etc. out there want to send me their unwanted new fivers??
A PO Box can be arranged....
The only headline to top this would have to be:
"Mourinho Sees Red (Again!) as Spurs Victory Secures Premier League Title"
One Headline I Would Never Have Expected...

We all make our own choices in life, Arouna. I was well into my 30s before I gave up eating meat, so I am in no way going to start preaching to anyone about how to live their lives.
If you like eating meat, fine. Maybe consider eating a little less meat. It would be good for everyone, mainly yourselves.
So my problem with the issue in the OP isn't so much to do with tallow itself - as Random says, it is a byproduct of the meat industry.
My problem is the fact that apparently at no point in the development and planning stage did anyone even consider that this might be a problem for, what cannot be denied is, a growing number of people our society.
Namely vegans.

To be fair for protien I take about 1/3 from animal, 1/3 fish and the final third from hippy veggie sources. At least two meals a week are veggie only....its easy to do and is less expensive and quicker sometimes than cooking meat.
I don't want to go that far into it, but if these people want to be fully vegan they have some really tough choices and lots of research into animal derived elements to many products

The telegraph believe the number of Vegans to be less than 1,000,000 in an article back in May. should decisions that impact on less than 1% of the population be always considered? There are many groups that should then be 'catered' for. Maybe as a vegan who made this choice, you ask for £1 coins and not notes? Problem solved.

Absolutely.
Having lived with one for eight years, I know that being vegan is not an easy lifestyle choice. However, maybe more so because of that, I respect their choice highly, even though at this moment in time it's not for me.
I just wish someone had been a bit more thoughtful regrading using an animal derived product in something we all HAVE to deal with, whether we eat meat or not.

Yes, i think that's a good solution. I mean, but pointless recalling all the £5s now anyway.
But 1,000,000 vegans is still a considerable number, and, whether it lasts or turns out to be a fad, the interest in vegan lifestyle seems to be increasing year by year.
So some consideration should have gone into this imo.

I am not sure whether anyone is truly vegan really...How far up the line do you go? Stuff you buy in a vegan shop for instance, how did it get there? What if the lorry had leather seats? Does that count? Most tyres have animal-based stearic acid to help the rubber keep it's shape. Does that count?
Plastic bags use animal by-products. Do they count? etc etc
I admire vegans in a way, but also find they can be a bit "holier-than-thou" at times. Can be irritating.

Indeed. In fact I'm sure there are some vegans that have more of a problem with vegetarians than they do with meat eaters.
