They're going to use apples and raisins instead of tallow.
They're going to call it fruit and fiver.

This would make it much easier to get my fiver day.
World gone mad!
some people have investigated the vegan claim and it appears the amount of tallow contained in all £5 notes to be produced will be roughly 0.00007g!
Probably more 'meat' on the note itself as it is passed about. What will people go who dont eat beef/pork....demand they are wiped down before you hand them over if you have eaten a burger or bacon butty?
Apparently ALL bank notes have traces of cocaine on them within two weeks of being issued.

Just proves that no amount of laundering can clean up some of this dirty money.
Tallow is a by product anyway, better than it being wasted..

It's not missing the point.
The royal mint didn't go out and slaughter animals to make the note. And it's something like 0.0000007g per note.
You probably get more animal matter on your hands each day shaking the hands of non vegans it's a complete non issue.
In which case, why don't vegans wear leather or fur?
After all, the animal is already dead.
As I say, completely missing the point...
Completely different many animals are killed FOR their skin for the fashion industry, I completely support a vegans stance on that issue.
I never said "it's fine because the animal is already dead" I said "it shouldn't be an issue as its a by product of other industries"
It's matter that would otherwise end up in the bin, so the preference is that said tallow is left to rotate and instead we use environmentally damaging chemicals instead?! Pick your battles ffs..
Rotate - meant rot.. Autocorrect
I understand that, but the point I'm making, and the reason vegans have a problem with this, is that no animals should be abused or killed for human consumption.
Are you really struggling with this concept?
Not sure how I can make it any clearer tbh, pal.

If vegans don't want animals killed for human consumption they need to look into a way to make them less delicious!
We all make our own choices in life, Arouna. I was well into my 30s before I gave up eating meat, so I am in no way going to start preaching to anyone about how to live their lives.
If you like eating meat, fine. Maybe consider eating a little less meat. It would be good for everyone, mainly yourselves.
So my problem with the issue in the OP isn't so much to do with tallow itself - as Random says, it is a byproduct of the meat industry.
My problem is the fact that apparently at no point in the development and planning stage did anyone even consider that this might be a problem for, what cannot be denied is, a growing number of people our society.
Namely vegans.

To be fair for protien I take about 1/3 from animal, 1/3 fish and the final third from hippy veggie sources. At least two meals a week are veggie only....its easy to do and is less expensive and quicker sometimes than cooking meat.
I don't want to go that far into it, but if these people want to be fully vegan they have some really tough choices and lots of research into animal derived elements to many products

The telegraph believe the number of Vegans to be less than 1,000,000 in an article back in May. should decisions that impact on less than 1% of the population be always considered? There are many groups that should then be 'catered' for. Maybe as a vegan who made this choice, you ask for £1 coins and not notes? Problem solved.
Absolutely.
Having lived with one for eight years, I know that being vegan is not an easy lifestyle choice. However, maybe more so because of that, I respect their choice highly, even though at this moment in time it's not for me.
I just wish someone had been a bit more thoughtful regrading using an animal derived product in something we all HAVE to deal with, whether we eat meat or not.
