Know it's the late in the time of day, week/month/year etc to be asking this question, but..
Who do you rate as the single greatest Vocalist ever?
I don't mean greatest singer, songwriter, pop artist etc.. just the one person who's voice resonates with you above all others.
If I had to pick one it'd be between Cat Stevens and Otis Redding. There's something about each of their voices that hits me everytime. They could be singing about playing chappie or writing a physics paper and it'd mean something.. they each have something special in their voices.
Who does it for you?
Greatest Vocalist ever.

Love Cat Stevens but definitely not one of the best vocalists ever. In fact it's the worst side of his talents. Like Bob Dylan, great song writer but not a great vocalist.

Are you deaf?
Bob Dylan couldn't sing, Catherine Stevens very much could. If you think he couldn't I'd suggest listening to Father and Son again as it isn't sung by a guy who can't sing.

I didn't say he couldn't sing. Also Bob Dylan could sing. What I said is his vocals weren't the best ever and it was the worst side of his talents.

Cat Stevens' voice is more suited to it. When you listen you feel like there is a real conversation going on between a father and son. You don't feel that with Ronan Keating so I'll have to disagree with you there.
I also find it strange that he would use that song to prove his vocal excellence. Like you say it proves how well he writes but his vocals are much better on other songs.
I love how Cat Stevens sings, as I do Bob Dylan but there are much better vocalists, most of whom I don't like. For me it's about the whole package not just vocals which is why they are two of my favourite artists.

+++++
If anything that song proves Reds point. It's a great song with great lyrics but Cat Stevens voice lets it down and has been sung far better by others

Shut it you
His original version is still comfortably the best, great voice.. really haunting.
