Paul Rodgers is possibly the best pure rock vocalist IMO. He can do it all, good enough to fill in for Freddie Mercury is a statement in itself. Cat Stevens has the most pleasing voice I can think of, but they're different styles. Then you have your crooners like Sinatra was in the past and Harry Connick Jr. is now. Then there is soul, and Marvin Gaye was possibly the best IMO. But bottom line music is purely subjective, and everyone has different ears, both physically and as well as their opinion of what they like to hear. We actually hear things differently, so the term "best" is purely that, subjective. That's a real tough topic you got there, and you'll get many different answers, all correct, since they are subjective,
It's a difficult one because peoples own musical tastes will always sway their decisions.
I'd probably say somebody who does classical though as the skill set far outweighs most other types of music.
I'm not a fan of the genre though.
Most iconic voice would be a good one. Ottis, Stevie, Marvin, Aretha, Sam Cooke, Tom Jones.
Dating myself, I'd say roy Orbison. Saw him before his willbury days and he was amazing. Brought the crowd back to the fifties. Had just seen the pistols the week before, what a contrast.
I don't even like the music or know the blokes name but the lead signer of iron maiden has a serious voice on him!
Female
Karen Carpenter, Annie Haslam
Male
Geoff Tate, Mike Patton, Sebastian Bach, Paul Rodgers.
I'd have to put Robert plant up there...not a massive fan of led.i prefer heavier rock but the range that guy had at his peak was insane...Freddie is a personal favourite as Queen got me into music properly health had tremendous variety in his singing....and a final nod to Tim Jones again not a fan but can't help but tip the cap to a legendary vocalist then again I headed out tonight straight from work and I'm sitting in a taxi just bow totally steamboats on ja606 so my post is probably a load of gash!!!!
