Was Dusty Springfield not a rug-muncher?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
She was indeed Pointy. Feckin waste, so it was.
I have seen a few shouts for Mike Patton, have to agree. His performance at the Brixton Academy with Faith No More was absolutely brilliant. Very funny guy too.

Rod Stewart deserves a mention also
For being the exact oppositite of the best singer ever
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Says the Bono groupie
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I love U2. Even if you don't like Bono, as is now tiresomely predictable, he was a great singer in his day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His talent does get overlooked or lost amongst all the non music stuff
He really is an excellent vocalist and in his day along with his band one of the best live acts around
Just seen this thread, and not read through the 8 pages yet so sorry if I'm off topic by answering the OP.
Mike Patton is the best technical vocalist. Billboard tested across music history and Patton is the only one ever with a six octave range. No one even comes close, four octaves was enough to get into the top ten.
Even though Patton sang for my favourite band of all time, I still wouldn't answer him for this question (he isn't even my favourite singer from that band).
Purely based on the tone and character of his voice, I would probably say Cash.

Steve Hogarth from Marillion. For the ability of getting sheer emotion into his vocals on stage he is probably the best I have ever seen.

I always preferred Fish's voice

If you ever have a touch of nostalgia for the early Marillion, get the Mick Pointer Band's 'Script Revisited'.
It is a replica of their first ever show at Hamersmith Odeon.
If it's just pure singing ability then Noel Gallagher wins hands down. Pitch perfect every time
The greatest vocalist and your favourite vocalist are completly different things. Russell Watson was called The Voice for his technical ability to sing and I have heard people in the past say he is the greatest vocalist ever across all musical styles.
Does that mean I like him? Fack no.
Then you've got a whhole bunch of classical singers like the 3 tenors to consider.
But if the OP means what I thin he does, I dont really have a favourite singer and a singer doesnt have to be great to love their music.
I never liked U2 or Bono though.
He is better live than in the studio. Not many guys can do that.
Its down to the sound engineers a lot of the time. I've only ever donee that at an amateur level but done the sound desk for a couple of professional musicians. The atmosphere in a concert really helps as well. And as I said there are classical singers who deserve greater praise than the likes of him, a lot of them dont use microphones unless they are in very large venues and can still sound better than recorded in the studio.
Another one I forgot.
Colin Bluntstone.
