An inconvenient truth

Wenger: "It would be inconvenient to speak about me tonight."

He's staying.

I don't know if it's been signed or not. But all this dithering and delaying is clearly not the sign of a man who has decided to leave. Rather someone who wants to stay but (rightfully) is aware that now is absolutely not the right time to announce it.

Its not about announcing to the public. Its about telling the players especially their agents as we are close enough to the end of the season for negotiations to begin with those whose contracts are ending, or those who are planning to leave. Thats why I don't think he is staying, at least not in his present role.

"I suspect he is either going upstairs or out."

Rumours that Vieira is being brought in as DoF.

Maybe the board and Wenger feel they can't disclose any info to the players, after the 'leaked' training ground bust up with Sanchez?

Not sure how that would work. Vieira is going to be Wenger's boss?

So instead they watch players who want to go if Wenger leaves perform like they don't care? Walcott pretty much said it. Whats better?

Everything I've seen of his behaviour and heard from him in interviews points to the contrary. He clearly, genuinely, believes that he is still the right man to deliver success to Arsenal. Nothing has changed at all. If he didn't take the hint after the 8-2 vs Utd, or the 6-0 vs Chelsea, why would he now? You underestimate how attached he has become to the job.

Is Ivan Gazidis Wenger's 'boss'?

I suspect that were Vieira, or Pires, to be given a DoF role, they would still be subservient to the manager.

Which, yes, would probably cause even more imbalance at the club - though hopefully only in the short term - whilst they were groomed for taking on the job, and all its responsibilities, once Wenger finally leaves.

Unless they have retired by then, of course...

Oh I agree with you completely on how much he wants to continue. Thats why I have suggested for a couple of years now that the only way to get rid of him would be to promote him if it was left up to him.

I just think the level of disorganisation on the pitch has got to be down to a lack of coaching. We have always been bad compared to other top teams but not marking properly, centre backs trying to head balls instead of the holding player, uncertainty from players in interviews suggests to me the club is in flux. Wenger has always indicated he was going to stay in the past even when his contract was still in negotiation. We haven't heard that from him this time.

Wenger takes his orders from the board. Josh Kroenke is a board member so I suspect Wenger does take orders from Gazidis. Now if Gazidis isn't brave enough to do his job is another matter. Which comes back to Wenger and DoF. Essentially the DoF would have to over rule Wenger otherwise what would be the point? I don't see how Vieira/Pires or any ex-player for that matter would learn anything in a sporting director role. Coach, yes, absolutely. But Sporting director is completely different and would mostly be a desk job.
