If Alonso's absence was really as destabilising or unsettling as what it has appeared, why didn't we either change formation or give Ake his chance?
At this time, i'm with Just Shoot on this one, i'm struggling to see why we recalled him from his loan.
And surely the player himself must be thinking something similar?
Ake, would you have played him?

From what I understood, Alonso's ommission from the team was a last minute decision. I am not sure Ake made the trip to OT yesterday either

Ake was sat on the bench!

Win the league or not, the squad definitely needs strengthening.
If we win the league and the club hierarchy hasn’t learned from the Summers of the last 2 times we won it, then sooner or later we’re gonna have to accept the penny isn’t gonna drop.

So, he was
Then I can't really explain why he opted for Zouma instead.

It's not so much that he opted for Zouma, as Zouma couldn't reasonably be expected to play at LWB; more the fact that he didn't slot Ake straight in, in place of Alonso, as opposed by moving Dave there and put Zouma in Daves place!
A double wammy IMO!!

Brummie
How'd you feel if we win the league and don't improve the squad in the summer? More about our board really. I know you'll love winning the league.

Flash, hopefully they'll have learned the lessons of previous mistakes, but then they've made the same mistake more than once.
If we're to continue playing Three at the back and wing backs then they need to get together with Conte, and establish what we need.
Priority is a left and right sided WBs, we cannot continue trying to shoe horn players who are not comfortable in that position. Whether that is by bringing players in or from the youth system I don't know, personally I believe we have lads who can do a job there in the academy.
The CF situation also needs resolving, we can't go an entire season again with him blowing hot n cold and getting involved with his on field vandettas any longer. I've no idea why Batshooy can't get a look in but surely he couldn't have been worse than Costa yesterday.
And we also need a partner for Kante in midfield, Matic has become to wasteful and Fabregas just can't impose himself against top PL teams!
I'm also not sure where the present system leaves Zouma. He's a player with loads of potential but ultimately suited to being a CB in a back four. He obviously can't play as a WB and looks out of place in a back three as far as I'm concerned - shame as he's a talent

As for loving winning the league, I managed ok for forty odd years, so reckon I can handle life without it.
All I need is Chelsea!

I know that, I understand the tactics Brummie
I can only think, he opted with Zouma in an attempt to nullify Rashford's pace, otherwise Ake was an able replacement for Alonso.
