How Do We Progress?

reading Don's rant below, I do agree with much of it, but I don't want to dwell on today's game. The performance was simply unacceptable for a spurs team going into a NLD, but that is done, Arsenal deserve their win, and everyone else has won so we will be thoroughly punished for our ineptitude.

My question is what exactly do we have to do to progress in these big away games that we are so poor in?

I cannot quite put my finger on whats wrong... is it mentality? is it tactics? is it individual errors? is it lack of technical ability to go to the big grounds and come away with 3 points? is it poor preparation?

in poch's defence it was the international break, and we clearly had players who were not fit or jaded, but this pattern is a very established one now...... away ground in a big game... zero points making their way back to Tottenham High Road.

it really is very very poor for a team of our calibre, intact it is poor for pretty much any side in the league....

so what do you think we need to do to address this? I want this article to be constructive. if you want to rant, please do so on Don's... I'm heading over there to have a rant myself

LLM...............not seen you on here for ages, seem to remember you were moaning then too

And as for others going into meltdown, I totally agree..................with Sandy.
It’s one game and we knew it would be hard this season, yet the team have already exceeded our expectations in the CL, we are still in the top 4 and have 26 leagues left, yet some of your are predicting Armageddon

LLM............in his one start Gazzaniga was man of the match, Foyth was bought for the future and has done okay. You seem to want to undermine everything our coaching staff do. Is it a personal issue you have?

Injuries always cost teams, Dembele obviously cannot play at his old tempo and losing Toby was a blow.

Aurier will, I believe, become a very good player for us.
As pointed out, we cannot yet compete with the money teams in terms of transfers. Our wage bill is more than half of what Arsenal, Chelsea, City & United pay out.

I think we know we are not going to win the league, but finishing in the top 4 is achievable and to do that 3 years running would in my book, be acceptable.

Hengy, Armegeddon may be over the top agreed, but there were a lot of posters throwing their toys out of the pram, over just a couple of away defeats.

Don’t see that mate just see people giving opinions on the subject.

The point of a forum tbf.

Just because I don’t think we have a strong enough squad to deal with key injuries or back ups not good enough to replace off form players isn’t throwing toys out.

Personally don’t think we’ve been great much this season.

Interestingly, in the some of the matches we have had majority of possession, Chelsea and Arsenal for instance, we have lost.

Madrid dominated possession against us in both games, yet we came away with 4 points.

Domination only matters if you put the ball in the onion bag more times than the opposition do

Hengy.............Armageddon is just a term I used to describe certain fans histrionics on here. No one is querying anyone’s right to debate or post, just for the comments to be relevant and sensible.

The main problem is that after last season and our current CL progress, people’s expectations become higher and higher, so that if we have a setback like yesterday they think we are failing.

There are times when we have underperformed, the main problem yesterday was a) we had a clearly struggling Kane, a player in Dembele who is also struggling, an out of form Dele, (maybe all the Barcelona/Madrid talk is affecting him?) and an Arsenal team who rediscovered their mojo and who we could not cope with, especially down the flanks.

On the plus side, Sanchez has been an excellent addition to our back line, oozes class and has a very good football brain.

Incidentally, Hugo needs to learn to stay big on his near post. Their 2nd goal was definitely a schoolboy error on his part.

Don’t know if it’s Poch or the players, but there’s a clear lack of belief and intent in these away games. I said that after the United game and I said it nearly 2 weeks ago on a thread about this game.

We turn up and we’re usually alright in possession, we don’t seem too flustered or under siege or anything, yet we don’t step it up to try and win the game. You look at City last season at United and this season at Chelsea; played with the firm belief and conviction that they could win the game and despite the close scorelines, they actually took both of them to the cleaners. That’s not about money or anything as the teams they beat aren’t exactly short of cash.

Until we have the confidence to go out and win it we’ll always be behind the 8-ball. We’re losing some of these games in a really timid fashion which is poor. Would rather we went down by trying to win it. Was fairly drunk yesterday so didn’t see the game too clearly, but the United game was as clear an example of a lack of conviction that you could find from us.
