Sterling and Alli...

I really think that now is the time for Gareth Southgate to make a big decision and bench these two,to bring on players that are physically fit and want to play for the shirt.
I sympathise with Dele Alli but the poor lad is just not one hundred percent,is he even fifty percent and should he play any more part in the England set up?
This is no time whatsoever for sentimentality to reach the final in the World Cup we need to go absolutely all out with the best, most motivated and fittest players we can possibly muster.
So come on Gareth do the decent thing and what is best for England and put these two out of their misery!

So, and I know this will be controversial, I don’t think the system has that big a detrimental impact on Sterling, I think the fact that he has Kane alongside him does. Sterling has to have someone either in front of him or if they are behind, then feeding the balls through.

If the system doesn't suit Sterling then even more reason to drop him surely,or are you suggesting we drop Captain and World Cup top scorer Harry Kane instead?

I’m suggesting that whoever we play won’t look good (in fact, worse) and that we should change the system.

Even Kane hasn’t looked good in open play at all, it’s not as if he’s missed chances, he hasn’t had any.

But Sterling has never been about playing on the shoulder of defenders so I don't think someone behind him playing those balls through is a big deal. He does dovetail with Kane pretty well and they seem to rotate who is the furthest forward. Essentially his job is to help create the space for the runners to go beyond him, which he does actually do very well. Maybe in that role he is never going to be someone that is going to hurt the opposition as much.

I agree, which is why for the system to work, it needs the midfield runners to run past the line, which didn’t happen at all aside from once with Lingard last night. Given there were no options out wide either, we’re back full circle to me asking earlier in the thread why Sterling was being judged to have had a poor game.

Now if he had Vardy along side him, that alters the system again as then he has got someone that is stretching the defence back rather than the same direction he is and it isn’t solely reliant on the midfield runners.

I agree with that too.

Can I just check though Great, I’m assuming you don’t think Sterling played badly or was the worst player last night either? If so, then we’re arguing similar perspectives I think.

My biggest issue with the system btw (and what will solve a lot of it) is width from the fullbacks. They have to get further forward and stay wide.

England are probably not the most talented team at this World Cup but we showed against Colombia why we have now got a great chance of winning it. (Alan Shearer)
***************************************************

First of all, congratulations to England for making it this far in the World Cup. Many doubted this, including myself, but what is really scary is that Alan Shearer is jumping on the band wagon!

Not quite sure what he means by "what we showed against Columbia"? We showed how to give up a tying goal in overtime on a corner. Where was the coverage in the box? Perhaps he was talking about the fact that we missed a penalty in the shoot-out and still managed to win? "Thank-you" Columbia!
