The nerve of Giroud throwing his face at Yedlins elbow like that, he could have suffered trauma the likes of which have never before been seen.
How the for did the linesman not see it four feet from him. Alle the comments ive seen have been he was encroaching on yedlins space and therefor ok....WTF does that mean ?
how dare he???

I think essentially it means that Giroud was going into the challenge expecting to be fouled. He didn't have an intention to win and come away with the ball.
I think that's what they are insinuating happened.

Yeah exactly thats why i assume he threw his cace at Yedlin….what a load of bolloxx...

I think it's a mix. Don't think he intended to get elbowed, but did intend to get fouled. Elbow was completely accidental so can understand why assistant would be reluctant to give it.
One of those grey ones where it could go either way, but either way people won't be happy with the outcome.

Obviously a foul on Giroud. An elbow to the face is always gna be a foul, interpretation doesn't even come into it.

there is never an excuse for have elbows up in that height, and as the injury was to face/head ref should have stopped the game under any circumstances.

Yedlin had a perfect view of where Giroud was as he was facing him giroud had his back to Yedlin so how was he encroaching yedlin went into the tackle with his elbow up already no way was that a natural arm movement it was deliberate and dangerous

Having seen the replay a few times it looks very intentional imo, even to it looks to me he moves his already high elbow in a very unnatural way - challenge should be up for review by the fa.

Clear foul on Giroud ... but then never a pen to Chelsea prior to that. With VAR the game would have finished 0-1.

I'm still surprised at the amount of people who think that going through a player to play the ball is a fair move...
He clearly did this...hence the pen...correct decision

I'd expect retrospective action to be taken here...

Giroud is 6 foot 4 , its pretty impressive to raise your arm high enough to accidentally elbow him in the face.

I can sort of see why the referee didn't give it as it happened quickly in real time to see it. However when you look at the replay it is a definite foul. Don't think it was particularly intentional therefore no further punishment other than the foul (certainly not a red).
The chelsea pen was 100% a pen. Yes, he gets the ball, but alonso still is in control of the ball until the second scissor motion when he's taken out, hence a penalty all day long
