............ be nice to the person behind the bar, in the pie shop or cleaning the toilets.
Sam Cunningham in the 'i' today points-out that despite Richard Scudamore getting a £5M "golden handshake" from the Premier League clubs to stop him having to go to a food bank in his retirement, there are only FOUR of them that pay their staff the real living wage:
Chelsea, Everton, West Ham & Liverpool
Incredibly, there are only FIVE more football organisations in the whole of the UK who choose to pay their staff this wage:
FC United of Manchester, Hearts, Luton, the Football Supporters' Federation and my own club Derby County.
Remember folks "we are all in this together".
Happy Christmas.
Next time you go to the game .........

Take it with a pinch of salt but I found an article by the Telegraph claiming that both Liverpool and West Ham have both been caught advertising for positions at less than the living wage.
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/08/17/liverpool-break-promise-pay-workers-club-living-wage/amp/

not true is it?
It wasnt LFC advertising for the position, from the article - "...found an “event steward” advert from sub-contractor StadiumTM offering the legal minimum of £7.38 per hour to under-25s and £7.83 for over-25s"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
bit of a hollow pledge if the club excludes those employed through third parties.
Ultimately the club has control over those it procures to run elements of their business.

Agree, I would much prefer it if Liverpool ensured all suppliers adhered to the policy and if they don't then they aren't eligible to work for us.
I really hope that the reason the numbers are so low is that clubs don't disclose wages or discuss their policies. If it genuinely is that few clubs committed to paying the living wage then it's shameful.

so this StadiumTM was only advertising this rate for stewards at Anfield or for other clubs it serves too?

Does it matter Red?
Our club has made an admirable statement of intent in terms of direct employees, it would be great if they could push that out one more step and make it a requirement for 3rd party suppliers.

They probably can't. However they can decide to stop using them, I though I think you'd struggle to find one that will accept to meet the commitment..

Imagine paying Sanchez £885k/pw and not paying the minimum wage to other staff of the club.
Disgusting...but expected.

Honestly, this is shameful behaviour by the majority of football clubs.I thought that UK was a country with basic human rights.

Yes, Chelsea are one of the few decent clubs left

What makes you say that?

That's pretty much what I meant, make it a requirement and if people aren't prepared to do it then they don't win the work.
If we made that move then wouldn't struggle to find someone prepared to do it. Suppose you're right and nobody is currently prepared to make the living wage commitment to their staff - all a company would have to do is make that commitment and they'd have a free run at the Liverpool contract. Probably the Chelsea one too. Nice little niche, people would spot that and get in. And then others would want to compete for it.

The national minimum wage is what they are required to pay by law, the living wage is a benchmark that the government wont raise levels to.
So clubs are not breaking any law, I understand they could pay more....but so could many other organisations

The point is that Premier League clubs are awash with TV money, pay some players £400K+ per week, have just contributed £250K a piece to Scudamore's retirement fund, but ONLY pay the minimum wage.

The point is, no club is breaking the law.
Just because someone is paid over €500,000 a year within ma company doesn’t men they have to pay more than they have to for basic staff.
