Due to circumstances I couldn't make the game on Saturday, but by all accounts I didn't miss much in terms of quality and good football. But what I did miss was a big, big win for United when we (finally) took advantage of slip ups elsewhere to move within three points of the leaders.

Both Ross County and Ayr United have started slipping up lately and so far we've not capitalised. This weekend we did. Nicky Clarke headed home against his former side to give us a massive three points. With Ayr looking toothless without Shankland up front, and Ross County getting hammered by a Stephen Dobbie inspired QOTS (just the 32 goals this season for the front man), it's given us half a chance.

I say three points but it may as well be four. Our goal difference is horrendous and I do worry it's going to cost us dearly. To be at this stage in the season and in a title race and only have a goal difference of +2 is extremely poor and tells us a lot about our failings this season. Obviously we've increased our attacking options in this window - although I believe neither Cammy Smith, who started, or Aiden Nesbitt were able to contribute much to this game. Gomis wasn't able to feature on Saturday.

We do need to go on a run and I'm not convinced we have it in us to string together the 7-10 wins in a row that I think we'll need to do if we're to win this league.

The game was marked by the attendance of new owner Mark Ogren and it'll be interesting to hear what comes out of Tannadice during and after his visit.

Next weekend however is a week off from the league campaign and we head to Montrose in the Scottish Cup. Hopefully it'll be a good turn out from the Arabs and it's an easier journey for me these days! I'm hoping to see all three of the new signings start and hopefully we'll have one or two more in by then.

Lex, I hope so mate.

I like Neilson, I think he's a good coach and I think he'll do well. Unfortunately he's lumbered with some amount of pash and it's why he needs backing in the transfer window - but with that comes risk, particularly since we do have a bloated squad as it is.

Current odds to win the league:

Ross County 1/1
Ayr 11/4
Dundee United 9/2
Inverness 66/1

9/2 for United is proving popular. Similar to Rangers at 7/2 which is equally as popular. I'd say United have a bigger chance of winning the league than Rangers though.

Was my first game in a while at Tannadice and it was brutal viewing. At £22 a pop it becomes difficult to justify working over 2 hours to cover it. Especially as I enjoy my job more than watching that pash.

Safranko was so far ahead of any United player it was embarrassing to watch. Great hold up play and not one sausage ever attempts to help him out, making brilliant runs into space and the ball gets shanked out for a throw-in.

Oh and the full-backs. Deary me. Funny to think the most recent good left-back we've had is arguably the best in the world. Murdoch is ok defensively but there were occasions where he had the entire half of the pitch to run into and he just stayed at right-back, refusing to give the team an attacking option.
Booth is abject. His only attribute is being infinitesimally better than Robson. Also probably not a racist drink driver.

But we won. Yay.
