Fostering

has anyone on here done it,

My partner and I have taken on our first foster child as of yesterday on a temporary basis.

My ma and stepdad did it for 20 plus years, and I've been involved in the process for many years but this is the first time we've had someone in our care.

be interested if anyone has been involved in this

As an aside, blocking social media and safgaurding internet access is often a thing you have to do.

My bother used this, https://support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/articles/227988047-Web-Content-Filtering-and-Security which was free and worked great. It particularly important to avoid kids friending abusive parents(or relatives) etc on facebook/twitter etc. As kids birth family can often try to twist kids against foster family etc.

Do you get to choose one that can cook? Or do you just get them with random skills?

Funnily enough well not really but I’ve heard stories that many kids with addicts for parents have to be able to cook otherwise they won’t have hot meals.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The girl who joined our family at 7 years old knew how to cook heroin because she used to do it for her parents. Her and her siblings fed each other from the bins behinds Sainsbury’s where they throw the food out. She knew which food was thrown out on what days and at what time. She didn’t realise that you had to pay in shops because her parents used them as shoplifters. Worst of all, for the first three years she was with us she would soil herself instead of go to the toilet, because she’s never been toilet trained.

She also knew all about s*x and lots of other incredibly inappropriate things because of what she’d been through, and she kept forming friendship groups with kids three or four years older than her, because she was in many ways much more grown up than her peers. It was a real struggle for years, but it’s amazing how far she’s come in 11 years.

When she joined us we were warned by social that it was the worst case of abuse they’d ever seen. There’s stuff in her file that would make the West’s cringe.

Heartbreaking when you here of children who've had their innocence taken away by so called parents

I used to do a job years ago that involved going into people's houses, seen plenty of cases where the parents and their friends were all out of it like zombies in one room and the kids/toddlers were left to fend for themselves in the kitchen

Makes me so grateful for my upbringing, we didn't have much money but never wanted for anything parental wise

my mum/stepdad had a girl (10) who came to then with her younger brother.
She had been sexually abused from a young age by the grandfather.
She came to them quite feral but not as bad as what you have described above

I'm doing it on a restbite basis however I have a feeling the SS want it to be a longterm thing as the kid is 12 and my 14 year old gets on with him.

Fair play tho man.

My Mam and Dad both fostered (they split up) after the kids flew the nest.

Mixed results.

Pranks. What a great and noble thing to do. You, and everybody else who does this, has my respect.

my mrs would like to do this properly when she retires in many years time, this just kinda fell in our lap as we have had the kid stay with us previously as he is friends with my son and my parents were foster carers.

Bizarre circumstances really, and it all happened over 24 hours last Thursday when the SS called us up about 8pm that night.

You have heard some interesting stories from your parents.
