Reading comments on forums such as this and the BBC HYS, I wonder what some supports get out of football more. So, simple question:
Would you rather watch your team play exciting, entertaining football every game but not actually win the league?
OR
Watch them play dull, boring football every game but win the league?
OR
Not bother watching any matches but the league?
What do you get from football

Then you have the lower league teams who will never win anything. In those instances I guess the fans just want to be entertained.
there's always something to win, elvis. even for us lower league slobs.

I don't mean Leeds or any of the sleeping giants that will have aspirations of returning to the PL. More the teams down in the League 1 & 2 that might get promotion, but then are likely to come back down in a year or two.

I watch Swindon play quite a bit as a friend is a season ticket holder (sucker!!) - he finds it really enjoyable to seeing ex-Swindon players being successful at big clubs - that's almost like a trophy for him!

I'd take one season of boring football to win the league. No doubt.
Long term, give me attractive football to watch. I'll never forget the AVB period - even with Bale winning games for us we were just awful to watch. Then you have the real caants like Pulis. Fack that.
After a few seasons of that the atmosphere would turn to sheit and the team wouldn't be up for winning anything anyway.

To be brutally honest, I would rather like to see other clubs play champagne football (Barca, Dortmund, Ajax in the past decade) while my own club sticks to play realistic football. Watching Arsenal under Wenger in his last few years was really painfull as a fan.
But I do have a pet peeve: If you are title contenders or have a better squad than your opponents, don't play like relegation contenders especially at home. Mourinho is the prime example of this, but I also remember the countless italian derbies (AC-Inter, Juve-AC) with both italian coaches playing 4d chess with eachother.

Another way to look at it is on a game by game basis.
If you're a Wolves fan playing City, you don't mind if the team is ultra defensive. Next game you play Fulham then you want to see you're team going forward and playing some good stuff.
For some teams it will depend on the opponent. Others like Liverpool will play the same way against all opponents.
Teams like Jose's United are an anomaly as they were boring no matter who they played.

as a sport it is
a) impossible to play at the same level week in week out
b) its not set up to be Harlem globtrotters. football is played home and away and the rules allow good defending so results like 4-3 are rare.
c) a casual arm chair fan might be bored stiff watching a team putting huge effort into playing a really good tactical game. a person who actually knows the game might be highly entertained.
I myself like a fast paced game where space is available for players of skill to do something amazing if they can.
I however can't expect a rival side to lay down while my team carves them up.

Football is all about friendship, community and great times with the people around you.
If winning a trophy is how you have to enjoy your home games then it’s a sad day for 98% football fans.

Passing through, looking for interesting articles and found myself here... so, to be clear, the last option means not watching any games but your side win. So you could play great stuff it boring, wouldn’t matter, as you miss it, but satisfied as you win? Or am I reading that wrong?
If I read it right I’d take that as these days it’s me to a T. Gone off football over the last couple of years, too many dives and drama queens and the wages just make me cringe. That and the ups and, lots of, downs of Arsenal isn’t good for me. But I saw us go undefeated for a season so I am kind of set for life really... a champions league at some point would be good but meh, can’t complain.
