Win the league.

play exciting football for 3 or 4 years win a cup or two.
play boring football and win the league then back to exciting football.

George Grahams Arsenal were said to be boring but 89 and 91 were great seasons and I wouldn't swap either for anything from 05-11, where we allegedly were the entertainers.

i dont think your own team can be boring and win the league actually. more for the neutrals to decide whats boring.

Win the league.

For a one off season win the league. Long term I want an exciting team, with some young players being developed, especially ones who come up through the youth system.

I would imagine Liverpool fans after this long would take a full season of winning 1-0 with the occasional draws, playing a more defensive 'boring' way if they could win the league next year.

Maybe City fans after their recent successes, and being used to watching brilliant, entertaining football, would rather have another season of Pep but them finish 2nd, than hire Jose or Simeone who changes the style, and bores their way to one more title?

---------------

It all comes down to the individual club and where they are at. As a United fan, after a long period of success, followed by a few seasons of rubbish football (and a few cups), I just want to see some exciting football for now. I want to see the kids given a chance to develop together and hopefully that will put us in a good position in a few years to start winning the big trophies again.

At the moment Liverpool fans are seeing entertaining football and have obviously won the CL, but I am sure that they would be more than happy to watch boring stuff for a year or two if it meant that they won the league.

Then you have the lower league teams who will never win anything. In those instances I guess the fans just want to be entertained.

It's interesting isnt it - winning things gives the fans one thing only - the ability to gloat to other fans (or not be ribbed by rival fans)!

You don't get a cup, any money, any entertainment or anything of any value whatsoever. Whereas the actual games are where we can get something - we can be entertained for 90 mins. We can watch exciting football that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Yet most fans would take the bragging over the entertainment!!

As some as alluded, it depends on your team too - personally id love to win the league, just to shut up the idiots more than gloat to others! The feeling you get from winning a trophy is great for a moment - but how is it greater than 40 odd games of exciting 90mins of football?!

nobody who was in Liverpool on the day of the parade would claim that winning things only gives you the ability to gloat at others.

end of.

football is a sport with a 100 different ways to go about it. Its also a form of entertainment but it is neither exclusively.

if you never win a thing but are happy cos it's nice to watch then fine.

if you want to be in a sport however you want to win.

the ideal world is being able to entertain and win. that's not easy

I don't mean Leeds or any of the sleeping giants that will have aspirations of returning to the PL. More the teams down in the League 1 & 2 that might get promotion, but then are likely to come back down in a year or two.

Indeed - like you say, attending a parade to see your team with the trophy is amazing! I have various sporting things saved on my box and watching them is always so uplifting!!

Funnily enough, when i play sport (5-a-side in particular) the winning means naff all - watching some young kiddie taking on every player and then smashing it home might mean i win the game, but i want to play not watch!!

I think yourve missed my point!! You DONT get anything - that's a fact! Im not saying it isnt amazing, im asking if that the feeling of 40+ games of 90mins entertainment > winning a trophy with no entertainment.

Ask yourself this - if you could win the league but not ever mention it to anyone and no-one else knows, would it be as rewarding?

I watch Swindon play quite a bit as a friend is a season ticket holder (sucker!!) - he finds it really enjoyable to seeing ex-Swindon players being successful at big clubs - that's almost like a trophy for him!

I'd take one season of boring football to win the league. No doubt.

Long term, give me attractive football to watch. I'll never forget the AVB period - even with Bale winning games for us we were just awful to watch. Then you have the real caants like Pulis. Fack that.

After a few seasons of that the atmosphere would turn to sheit and the team wouldn't be up for winning anything anyway.

To be brutally honest, I would rather like to see other clubs play champagne football (Barca, Dortmund, Ajax in the past decade) while my own club sticks to play realistic football. Watching Arsenal under Wenger in his last few years was really painfull as a fan.
But I do have a pet peeve: If you are title contenders or have a better squad than your opponents, don't play like relegation contenders especially at home. Mourinho is the prime example of this, but I also remember the countless italian derbies (AC-Inter, Juve-AC) with both italian coaches playing 4d chess with eachother.

Another way to look at it is on a game by game basis.

If you're a Wolves fan playing City, you don't mind if the team is ultra defensive. Next game you play Fulham then you want to see you're team going forward and playing some good stuff.

For some teams it will depend on the opponent. Others like Liverpool will play the same way against all opponents.

Teams like Jose's United are an anomaly as they were boring no matter who they played.
