Back when he signed his new contract I was downbeat - to the consternation of some people on here - but the writing was on the wall. He could have gone for free but no other clubs seemed to want him. What did our genius club do? They didnโt just re-sign him but at a huge boost on his original salary!
What has that done? Taken away any motivation to be the best and what we see how is (to some extent) the Alexis Sanchez version of DDG. Minted beyond his years and guaranteed to start every week whatever he does. And form has taken a dive.
Thereโs talk Chelsea might be interested in buying him this summer. If they pay enough I wouldnโt be against it. Henderson deserves his shot - I very much doubt he wants to go back out on loan. Anyone else feel DDG should be on the way out? Itโs imo almost impossible for him to get back to his best - that would have happened by now. Apathy has taken over where once genius stood..
The problem with DDG

But it’s not something we’ve looked to implement in competitive games, and I don’t think it’s just down to De Gea - I think it’s a combination of all of the factors I mentioned. Which is why I found the signings of Maguire and AWB even more peculiar, given what I’d read about Ole’s use of a high line and attacking full backs.
I think there are downsides, plenty in fact. The command of the area, his regression with his feet and reluctance to come off the line are issues we’ve known of for years. I just think we have bigger issues right now than him that need addressing.
Despite his dodgy form, I still think he’ll be very hard to replace. So it’s not an area I’d be looking at just yet.

He’s only just entered his prime, so I’m expecting 4/5 more top draw seasons from him.

This may be true but it's dangerous to assume he'll just get better and better. Some keepers age like fine wines. Some tail off like Joe Hart.

Henderson has similar attributes to DDG and wouldn't give us the "modern goalkeeping style" people are after.

It’s definitely not a given, but we’d be stupid of club not to give him another season at least.

This is true, we have a keeper called Kovar who looks particularly good with his feet.

His name might be an issue given the pandemic scare at the moment

To say that we should just put Henderson in is a ridiculous statement. Everyone can see that he's a good keeper, but there is a significant difference between playing in goal for Sheffield United (who are having a great season) and Manchester United. The pressures are completely different, and it's very difficult to be sure of how someone will handle it.
Personally, I wouldn't be against him playing the non-PL games if we recalled him for the next season, but I think he'd be better served getting game time on loan either in the PL, or a club that's got some European games.

Apart from that error v Everton I think he's been good recently. In fact, he's even started venturing to the edge of his box for a while.
However, for a GK who relies on his reflexes a lot I wouldn't see a situation where he stays until he's 40 such as VDS. Those reflexes go so I can see a situation where he leaves us towards his mid 30s if he stays with us. Funnily enough with De Gea though I think he performs better when he has a lot to do which is why I do find it strange we're not more expansive at times.
As for Henderson he does look a top keeper but there's a lot less pressure at Sheff Utd.

De Gea has been very good, he even pulled off a top draw save to keep it level. He’s slowly coming back to his best, there may still be brain farts on the way but he’ll get there. He’s only just entered his prime, so I’m expecting 4/5 more top draw seasons from him.

I hope this is the case, but regardless, Ole should give David a game off to watch and get his hunger back. When your howler costs as much as this last one - you should sit a match or two to contemplate. DDG knows he can screw the pooch and not face the music - not an ideal situation. Romero can hold his own and has some strengths DDG doesn't (calmness, distribution and command of the box on corners, etc). I don't want him gone - I want him focused and hungry.
