PS5 Teardown

OK, anyone interested in the inner workings of the PS5, this is an official breakdown of the parts, Highlighting all the ports, how to stand it up or down. The CPU, memory, and SSD. and the HD drive for anyone buying the disc version.

Sadly the guy breaking it down is talking Japanese, but all the parts are labelled in English. and I have just realised if you turn on captions, his words are subtitled in English. It also mentions liquid metal, which as I understand it is part of the cooling system, plus probably one of the biggest heatsinks ever in a console I doubt this thing will run either hot or loud.

Sony have obviously put a lot of thought into this console.

Having watched it again with subtitles, the liquid metal is indeed part of the cooling system, which was two years in the making. The reason for using liquid metal is to allow as much contact as possible with the CPU, just using a flat heatsink, no matter how smooth it may look to the eye, at microscopic levels it is anything but smooth, meaning trapped air and less contact. Thermal paste would normally be used to help solve this problem, However it is prone to drying out and is not as good as metal at conducting heat. Liquid metal naturally fills the microscopic gaps and conducts heat away at maximum efficiency.

Liquid metal sounds great, and it is. But it is not easy to implement, so hats off to Sony for adding this feature

So there's a T1000 inside the PS5?

Galium is a key ingredient of Liquid Metal, not strictly Liquid Metal on it's own, usually mixed with Tin and Indium, which which for some reason keeps it liquid at room temperature.

Sounds like a boss from a Hideo Kojima game.

Got a couple of low melting point metals at work - mercury and wood's alloy. Unfortunately I can't play with them as they're both toxic.
