I am probably in the minority, and I know they played in different eras, but I thought Cruyff was just a pure genius of a player, and I enjoyed watching him play a lot more than I did Maradona.

Dammit! I can hear the Incredible Hulk end credits playing, I’ll just grab me coat....
Man, I thought It was Brazil in Blue... they were wearing blue right?

Maradona was better but Cruyf was a coach on the pitch. He instructed the players where to move and which runs they should make to unlock defences.
The touch and close control of Maradona and his dribbling was much better.

He did invent the ‘turn’.. ushered in Total Football.
Back to back WC finals.
But I agree with Hoody.

He didn't play in 78

Some Aussie called Alston invented the Cryuff turn 5 days prior to Cruyff inventing it.

Did you ever try the turn in a match.
I did, fell over ball.. went home crying.

Not better than Maradona. He was head and shoulders better than any other player that's ever played the game. Completely flawed human being as well, no doubt. His football talent was immeasurable though.

Hmmm.. What about Ronaldo and Messi stats. Surely those can't be ignored. Maradona didn't come close to those stats.

Personally I think Ronaldo and Messi are the best players that we have ever seen.

A very good piece by Guillem Balague for BBC sport. He says everything about Maradona that you have to agree with,
but you also have to remember that no-one fully understood the man,he didn't even understand himself ! he was a cheat on and off the pitch, but he was also a loving ,caring and generous man,a true enigma.
A wonderful player second only to Messi, in my opinion.
RIP Diego.

Those are goalscoring stats which while very impressive don't necessarily determine everything. I prefer to look at how Maradona dragged a very average Argentina side with no other memorable players to winning a World Cup. Messi by comparison wasn't even able to win a World Cup with Argentina in a team with other top players like Aguero.
Also Maradona went to a complete non entity Napoli side in 1984 that never won anything and had only just avoided relegation when he joined. And within a couple of seasons he'd made them Serie A Champions in an era when Serie A was at it's peak with great sides like AC Milan and Juve filled with stars like Platini, Gullit etc.
And he didn't just guide Napoli to one title but two titles as well as a Uefa Cup. The size of that achievement cannot be underestimated as it's positively Herculean. And I seriously doubt any other player could have matched that immense impact that Maradona had.
