My favourite position in football and at Arsenal we have been gifted with some fine players. I know once you start this debate some people will try to create sub headings and box different players but as per the title there are certain players who have managed to tick all facets of the central midfielder role, play defensive, run with the ball, pass well and score a few.
Yes some players are athletes, some are more technical, but bottom line is if they execute the functions of a central midfielder they must be considered.Here is my top 5
1. Frank Rijkaard
2. Patrick Vieira
3. Steven Gerrard
4. Yaya Touré
5. Xavier Hernández
Obviously I am a touch biased towards athletes but there you go.

Yaya Toure over someone like Lampard? I’m a massive Yaya Toure fan but I feel he lives off his one great season he had which was 13/14. That season he was as good as any of Gerrard’s or Lampard’s best seasons, he was phenomenal. But other than that his seasons with City varied from good to average.
