Why the ESL is a bad idea

Yesterday when the discussion was ongoing TheFoxOutsideTheBox (U20459) was repeatedly asking why it was a bad idea. Apparently you hadn't seen anyone giving a reason why it was a bad idea. Maybe you missed it through all the replies, but I think it was pretty clear why this is terrible.

This is why I think its a bad idea

- It is a closed shop without any relegation or promotion. The 15 founders will always play in this competition, with an additional 5 teams based on their performance in their domestic league.

- You said it is an additional competition, it is not, the 20 teams will not play in the Champions League, nor the Europa League nor the Conference League. This also means no World Cup, no Super Cup.

- Based on that, your top 4 spots, which are normally occupied by teams out of the big 6. These 6 teams are gone. So the PL champion will not be playing in the CL, that will be your number 5-8 now. The battle for top 4 will be gone. This would now probably result in a battle for for top 5-8. EL spots will now be 9-11. This is going to have a massive impact on your UEFA coefficient. PL might start losing CL spots.

- 20 top teams in Europe are pulling out of the CL, that means out of 36 teams, the top 20 is gone, and the remaining 16, which would normally end up in the EL, will now be complemented by 20 lesser teams. Which makes the CL basically the EL. The EL will look like the new Conference League, and the Conference League can basically fack off before it even started (might be a good thing though)

- The money made in the CL will be significantly less. The 12 founding members of the ESL expect that the new competition will generate £4.6bn which they say is good for football. Not sure how that works, that money has to come from somewhere, and I would expect partially from money that would normally go the CL. And I do not expect the 20 teams in the ESL to share the money outside that competition. It makes no sense to do that, as the reason for the new ESL is to generate money for the big teams.

- the ESL is purely based on greed, Neville is right, it has nothing to do with sport reasons, it is money reasons. The big teams in Europe demand fixed spots in the CL. Why? It is based on performance, the problem is, if they should not qualify for the CL they get in trouble. But that means your set up of the club is wrong. Any club should be able to be sustainable without CL money. They cant risk not being in the CL, so they want to have a guaranteed income of that kind of money, hence they set up the ESL.

- Teams like Leicester will never ever play the like likes of Barca, Madrid, in Europe ever again. Unless you are invited to the ESL. These 20 teams in the ESL are pulling out of the European UEFA competitions. But then you become part of the problem.

- The competition in itself is going to be boring as fack, with the same (probably) 4-5 teams winning it, much like the CL. But the big difference it will be the same 15 teams year in year out, as they are the founding members.

- The matches will be played mid-week. This is going to add a ton of complications, as they will not be linked in with the UEFA/FIFA/domestic schedules. This is another competition that everybody has to consider when making the planning. Or they wont be considered at all, can you imagine United having to play their match against Madrid in their ESL on Tuesday, and the FA plans their match for the FA cup on the Wednesday and give them the two fingers.

I am sure there is more, but that's what I could think of.

This is an important point because I feel like those playing Devil’s advocate either don’t quite comprehend or don’t care. Yes, we know money talks in football already. You’ll be unlikely to find any enterprise where money doesn’t talk. What’s different and unprecedented here is the absolute lack of respect to the fans, to the sport, to competitiveness, it is ALL about money.

I’m often pretty relaxed about changes in football but for me it’s an abhorrent decision this. Sadly I can only object mainly from a ‘philosophical’ stand point as the decision is based solely on money, and that counts for very little to the clubs.

They need to chuck them out of the league and then tell the league and tell the players they won’t be picked for country.

What people are forgetting is this is still down to the players, people talk about the size of the clubs but if players don’t play for them then the existing leagues quality will be the same and no one will watch the super league..

Problem is the players follow money.. will Kane want to play for Tottenham when they are bottom of the super league and he can’t play for England?

Countries won't ban players who play for these clubs
Are you crazy, you think FIFA will want the best players not playing at the world cup
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To keep their superstars New Zealand refused to pick players that moved away from the super rugby and players stayed because of the pride they had for their country. Might not work with football though

Plus, should they be allowed to stay in the PL, what incentive will the big six have to win it or finish in the top four? None - not even money!

Which means they will play their second teams in the PL and save their “stars” for the ESL games - effectively making a mockery of the PL.

This has to be stopped but if it goes ahead then these teams have to be sanctioned. Kick them out of every competition we can and treat them like the lepers they deserve.

I'm sure either league would be happy to have them.
They would then be sharing in a TV rights deal, that would make the prem reduced deal, look like the SPL.

He wants his cake of the super league and to stay in the prem as well.

Liverpool might consider themselves one of the biggest teams in the world but if this starts and FFP ends Man City can spend what they want you will be also rans as well.

Be interesting what Klopp thinks about this..

no not really

Let see what happens, a lot of emotive rubbish flying about at the moment.

The picture will become clearer over the next few months.

It seems that the whole world bar the 12 'founders' are vehemently against this plan which is not an auspicious start.

It would be interesting to know who the other 3 teams mentioned are - they've not crawled out of the woodwork as yet.

It would also be interesting to know what sanctions might apply to out 'big six' 😂 for breaking the Premier league rule about not entering unauthorised competitions.

Finally, this concept needs a broadcaster. Will it be a new concern or one of the established giants? I might expect the likes of BT, Sky, Amazon etc to lose a lot of existing contracts if they got involved.

Eject the big six from the EPL? The relegated teams get to stay, 4 come up from the Championship and the EPL reduces to 18 teams to avoid the fixture congestion that the big six are always complaining about. Oh, wait a minute....
