I feel dirty saying this, but Twenty20 cricket has pretty much saved the sport. Both as a spectacle and as a business.

On one hand, it has kept the door open for a younger audience. And on the other, the anoraks get to enjoy their 5 day Test matches in peace.

I thought about this comparison too but I dont think football is in the same situation as cricket was. Football is popular enough to be sustainable without the ESL

People really need to learn how to read and comprehend.

In the average football match using the current rules, the ball is only in play on average 50mins per game.

They are actually proposing 30mins a half of actual football excluding all stoppages.

I thought the average was 60 Mins per game?

Personally, I like stoppage time as it is, as it adds an element of excitement at the end of games which are tight. You can counter that with time wasting, etc, but imaging you have to stop when the time is up? When few seconds left on the clock most teams if leading or happy with the draw will waste the time anyway. The losing team might play with a bit more emergency but let's say their keeper has it and there is 5 seconds left? They'll have to start going long ball then.

Couple years ago when Ajax played Barca in the group stages they set a record for the ball being in play for 40mins of the first half.

Truth is it varies every time you look it up.

Wasn't that long ago when boxing fans used to make fun of MMA.

Pretty much everyone I know under 25 is an MMA fan now. All the teenagers (even the girls) want to join a programme.

Those owners don't want sustainable, they want to make as much profit as possible and if they don't see enough £££'s coming in, we end up with ideas like the ESL..

I’d be interested to see what evidence, if any, there is of younger football fans not being interested in football or that football is at risk of declining in popularity. I have not seen any yet even from those defending Perez’s comments and anecdotally haven’t although that doesn’t count for much.

I agree with the view that there IS no evidence that interest in football is waning, it’s a moot point. What Perez may actually mean is that younger fans are not investing as much into the team, merchandise, viewing as younger fans did 20-30 years ago. But obviously that can’t be used as proxy for interest in football with so many wider parameters affecting that .

good to see the BBC doing its usual self-righteous moralising about preserving the game, though they have taken a very different approach with cricket, where the hundred - specifically designed to create new fans, rather than appeal to the legacy ones - has created a shorter version of the game, one that will slot nicely into the beeb's schedules.

in a way the hundred is the opposite of the ESL, it's a central power grab at the expense of the counties, whereas the ESL is the clubs trying to take power back from UEFA (and national associations). and all the fan complaints about how they don't care about regional franchises, why am i travelling to bristol to see a load of players i don't know etc, have been completely ignored.

If you reduce the game to 60mins then stop the clock when the ball goes out of play.
You'd end up with roughly same amount of play time as you have now.
