Where does this tournament rank & what happens next?

There was a lot of over the top praise after Friday and inappropriate use of the word "legends" because we had got a point against England at Wembley. However ultimately it's bottom of the group and out in the first round again.

The current group has two Champions League winners in it. 8 of the players who featured last night play in arguably the best league in the World, unarguably elite. There are players at Liverpool, Arsenal, Man United. One of them cost £25m. There's another this morning linked to Liverpool for £50m. We're not France or Germany but we're not Finland or North Macedonia either. Yet in arguably the weakest group with 3/4 teams qualifying we finished bottom despite home advantage in two of the games, scoring one & conceding five.

On the positive, after years of bemoaning the lack of quality being produced & players playing at elite level it looks like this has finally changed. We're finally producing a modern type of player and have kids coming through who might be of a better level than in the last 20 years. Guys like Gilmour, Tierney, Patterson, McGregor, Robertson, McTominey and McGinn are elite players and can make up the core of the squad for the next 5 years and few tournaments, whilst Turnbull will hit that level soon.

On the negative we still don't seem able to produce a decent centre back or striker of a similar calibre and this was exposed in the tournament. Nesbitt has a chance so hopefully he continues to progress at that level.
Another slight negative is that despite the technical progress, watching Scotland in these games only reinforced old stereotypes. It was telling that during commentary last night Dykes has had more headers than any other player in the tournament, double the amount of second place on that list. I understand lack of quality up front forced us in to that a little but it does a disservice to the quality we have elsewhere.

Anyway, hopefully some lessons learned and at least we don't need to listen to that song ever again.

Indeed, but the manager is paid, and under pressure from fans and media to win matches from the off. That is what does for them in the end - more so than the SFA who don't want to pay compo and the expense of finding a new one and start all over.

And this is exactly where we need leadership from the SFA. We basically need a DoF who'll say, our key strengths over the next few competition cycles will be in midfield and at full back and we want a manager to build a style around those strengths - even if it takes time - and to identify and bring in young players who will compliment those key players we have and the style we want to build - even if they make a few mistakes at first. They need to be upfront with whoever that manager is from the off and say we'll give you time to build in line with this vision as long as we're seeing certain key performance indicators along the way, and it doesn't matter if we miss a competition or two trying because we probably wouldn't have made them anyway!

Everything is so short-termist from the SFA at the moment that there's nothing for a manager to do but resort to agri-football in the hope of scraping through a play-off by trying not to lose.

I seem to remember some years ago, the Italians I think used the Euros to blood all their under 23s to make them experienced for the next world cup.....we could and should have done that to a fair degree. One game for Gilmour, seven fookin minutes for Patterson and no sight of Turnbull, Nisbet gets what ten minutes each game...truly pathetic management.

So Steve, disappointment at yet another major tournament?

Aye, I just thought I'd try guys that hadn't played before.

He'd get slaughtered and rightly so!

We had a manager that did that and he got binned though it might be he was a hvn with a lisp too.
