Played for penalties even when Shaw scored. He’s gotten a lot right in the tournament but today he facccked up and the side gave up whatever advantages they had so Southgate could live and die on his basic tactical calls.
What a waste. Italy went into extra time with two ageing CBs on yellow cards and he didn’t bring on Sancho and Rashford to have a go at them (until it was too late).
Southgate bottled it

You don’t have any right to ever speak about Maguire ever again the absolute tripe you’ve talked about him all season.
--
Come on, hardly tripe. The guys made a lot of mistakes in his united career.
Hopefully he can carry on his England form because if he does we'll have some defender in the team.

You said you’d played with better guys in Sunday league.

It wasn’t a great Italian team. It’s a shame we end up thinking we didn’t really go for it, but that’s the style that got us to the final, and then to penalties.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't like this idea that it's the style that got us here. We have talented players in this squad. I'm sure we could have reached a final with another more attacking style.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s the great unanswered question of these Euros: would we have done better with less caution? I said we were too negative against Germany but we won. I definitely think we were too negative tonight. Having pace up front was our best chance and we sacrificed a fast player. Plus, that was a 1-0 formation and I feel we scored too early really. They were always going to have an extended spell of pressure at 1-0 and of course they made it count.

It helps Maguire that the England team are set up better defensively than Utd.

Done better than getting to the final and losing on penalties with the third or fourth best squad in the competition?
Would France, Germany or even Spain have done better if they’d been more defensive?

Nah Maguire is still not much more than just a good CB who will eventually get exposed due to his lack of pace and mobility.
He's hardly faced any great attacking teams this tournament. Italy literally only had Chiesa who was any good.
We'll see the usual Maguire back in the prem next season.

Germany aren't the same force they used to be and we were playing at home. I think we could have still beaten them with another selection and formation. The other sides were all beatable. Italy were by far the toughest side we faced but we started so well and had momentum in the first half. That really adds to the feeling of it being a wasted opportunity to finally win something.

He had Walker covering for pace. We need to get a quick defender next to him.

I don't want to turn this into a Maguire bashing article because he deserves praise for his Euros performances.
To say he's been great for united though.... You'd have to be a bit of a spanner to believe that.
Average at best. (For united)

Fine margins, but we were 0-0 with Germany at 75 minutes and little between the teams. With one more attack-minded player on the pitch, we might have got the ascendancy earlier. And tonight - even if we hadn’t scored in two minutes, a side with two fast players in the front three might have caused them more problems than we did overall.
I like Southgate and think he’s obviously done really well, but for me the selections were an issue tonight and probably were against Germany too, even if we got through that. I’m not trying to have a go at him for nothing. He’s got us in a great place for the next competition.
As for those other teams, I’m sure that in France in particular they are lambasting Deschamps.

The hype over Southgates tactics and how good this side is/were is just that, hype.
When you actually look at each game England played they only had more shots in a game twice, against Ukraine and then Denmark, one of those games wasn't even at home meaning that in five of the six games you couldn't even outshoot the opposition whilst being the huge home favourite.
