Interview with Frank working at a top club

A very honest interview with Frank Lampard by Gary Neville:

It's pretty rare to see such insider info about modern day young managers failing their first big one, as they usually disappear or stay low out of shame, and only talk about it when they are at the latter stages of their coaching career.

Van Basten could not comprehend why players failed to do 'simple things' (in his view as Ballon d'Or winner ) and was crumbling mentally due to the pressure of winning and not being the driver but the one in the back seat so to speak.

This interview also debunked some myths among fans and rivals:

-Even as a club legend you're not gifted the job. Still need to present yourself properly in a job interview and have a sound plan/vision/ppt presentation to actually show the board.

-Frank actually checked a lot of boxes. His biggest issue was training for something for a whole week and finding out in the weekend that it didn't work at all (joked about him and Gary both knowing that feeling, sick burn ).
Pretty common issue/skills that separates the greats from the average coaches.

-Roman was totally hands-off and Frank didn't have any relationship with the owner. Hiddink and Mou were pretty much exceptions in their closeness with Roman. He does have the final say and is
ruthless regarding firing managers though :D

-Even as an inexperienced manager Frank did have a big say/veto in transfers and who he was allowed to play or bench (Kepa). Was also totally happy with the last transfer window but in his opinion very unlucky in how those players gelled with the squad.

For me the biggest learning is: don't just bring your mates as staff, but also a couple with actual skills. The challenge with that on the other hand is if they are really good they would rather become a head coach/manager themselves so most of the time you end up with pickings among a bunch of nearly men...

I saw this the other day. Thought it was very good and have subscribed.

Yeah same here, very unique content and I always thought that Gary was a much much better interviewer than pundit. He basically pundits like an armchair manager like us plebs with the main difference that we don't get paid for spewing BS...

I quite like him as a pundit, bit I don't mind them in general. Tbf I don't watch Sky much at all bar the actual games.

But totally agree with you about his interviewing. Thought Frank came across very well too.

Saw it the other day. Good watch.

Was a bit taken aback by his honesty of saying that five year plan he pitched the club (remember that getting leaked at the time) was all hot air. Pretty sure that was the case even at the time but didn't expect him to flat out admit it

Also interesting that he views not getting Derby promoted as his biggest regret in football period. Makes me wonder if they'd have been in a better position today if he'd stayed, cos from the outside he did seem to have something special there.

Haha yes you need a plan for both sides to look good in front of the owner. Imagine the board pitching a dude in track suit saying he's just gonna wing it to Roman

And regarding Derby. Looking back promotion was a make or break moment financially so I can see Frank 'overthinking' it and feeling somewhat responsible (of course it wouldn't have mattered if they overspend to survive in prem just before COVID was going to hit...)
