Oliver Skipp.

Good piece in the Athletic going into detail about how Skipp improves the team and more importantly revealing more detail about his injuries.
Before we get on to addressing why Skipp has been such a big miss, it’s worth clarifying the situation with the injury. Initially, Skipp was out with a groin problem that wasn’t thought to be serious. On February 8, Conte said: “The medical department said to me two weeks but I hope to have him available in one week or 10 days maximum."

This didn’t happen in reality and an injection, through no one’s fault, unfortunately led to Skipp picking up an infection in the pelvic area. It’s since proven to be very troublesome as this is a very sensitive part of the body that is not easy to rest or treat. Skipp has been in a lot of pain and taking antibiotics. The pubic symphysis is the joint affected and all Skipp can do is rest the central stabilising ligament in the pelvis where the problem is and wait for the pain to subside. Patience is very much the order of the day.

I’m really not seeing what some of you are seeing regarding Skipp. This has a ‘one of our own’ bias written all over it. If you were measuring his contribution objectively, you’d see he doesn’t actually offer us any more than PEH does. To describe him as a huge miss is frankly ridiculous.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Difference is Skipp is doing what Højbjerg can do plus more at what 4 years his junior?

You say it’s one of our own bias but if we bought him in from another club you’d be saying how exciting of a player he is and how we’ve done well to get him.

He’s a good player now and I’m positive he’ll be a top player in a couple years time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No I wouldn’t. I’ve just said he’s pretty average. If we’d bought him I’d be pretty underwhelmed to be honest. I don’t know what you guys think you’re seeing. You’re treating him like he’s our Declan Rice 😂 he’s absolutely miles off his standard. Is this really how far we’ve fallen? Norwich miss him. We shouldn’t.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
At Skipp age Rice was in his breakout season and was very inconsistent so yea he’s probably is our Rice.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
😂😂😂 Declan Rice is truly top drawer. That kid is going right to the very top, no question at all. He’s the nearest I’ve seen to Roy Keane since he retired. Skipp is nowhere near the standard he was at the same age.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He’s exactly the same standard rice was at 21, I don’t think he’ll reach the standard rice will get but he’ll definitely become a top player too. You don’t rate Skipp that’s fine, wrong imo and many others like Poch & conte but cool.

Well happy to be proven wrong in a few years but I have my doubts. We’ll see I guess.

For me Skipp is way better than Winks and thats why he has been missed. But I like his attitude. He gets stuck in and is not afraid to put his body on the line. He wants to captain Spurs one day so that tells you something about him too.

As for the comparisons with Rice, they have had different paths. Rice started as CB and wasn't that great but he excelled when he was given starts in CM.

Skipp has good engine on him. Not sure he will get to the same level but he will get better each season.

If anyone watched Conte play at Juve, there are similarities between Skipp and him. Conte was your classic worker in midfield. Doing all the dirty work for the likes of Zidane and Del Piero. Poch was another work horse midfielder in his day too so that's why they probably like Skipp. They probably see abit of themselves in him. Conte is perfect for Skipp in the long term if he is here.

I seem to remember he played for Argentina and gave away the penalty that gave England a win in the World Cup.

Fair enough. He wasn't blessed with techincal flair and was no rolls royce defender. He was a functional player as Ted says, cheers for pen bro.

Rice has just turned 23. At 21 Rice was a full international ffs. Exactly the same standard as Skipp
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m not sure being a international means anything. Caps get thrown around like confetti.

The point is Skipp at 21 is playing at the same standard rice was when he was 21. Rice over the two years since has become a incredible player.

Think that’s a bit harsh on Skipp he’s way more than a good attitude work hard player.

He’s got a good passing range on him also and was really starting to get in his groove before the injury.
