I posted this as a comment to the below article about Bellingham, but thought I'd re-post it as its own article because I think our fans need to get with it.
I find it funny how our fans still think we are a club that can just go out and handpick who we want as if every player in the world would want to join.
Why on earth would Bellingham (or any other half decent youngster) choose us over the other big teams?
- Standings-wise, we are a team merely challenging for the top 4, and have been for the best part of 10 years
- Our track record of improving players since Fergie left has been atrocious (name me a single player that has significantly improved since joining us)
- According to our own players, morale and spirit in the current squad is atrocious
- Quality-wise, not a single one of our players would realistically get into the Liverpool or City first XI (this is no exaggeration, go through the team yourself)
People will say money but I don't think an 18-year old cares that much about being paid 200k instead of 150k per week, hence we've only managed to attract 'world class' pensioners in the last 10 years (barring the odd exception ala Sancho)
Accept the sad reality guys

We have been in a mess since SAF left. That has not stopped players opting to come and play for us instead of someone else.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And over that time the mess has gotten worse—we now have players who can't wait to get away—and our rivals have become stronger.
We also probably won't finish top 4, and we still don't know who will be our next manager. So I wouldn't get your hopes up for this summer just yet.

We’ve improved since then under Ralf but still have a bit of a jump to get back to the higher points of the post SAF years. But I’m sure we can agree it’s not as impossible as people like Nohlman and others think

Problem is united have to get their next transfers right. What you could do transfer wise yesterday has no bearing on what u can do tomorrow and for as long as united are regressing the task of signing the best players becomes more difficult.
If you aren't in a race or the kid is a fan from youth then the Pl and united history/wages will trump most foreign options. If it's a race with big clubs it gets more and more difficult the longer united underperform
