Some snippets from Marsch pre Brighton

For me, I will just start with Brighton and say in theory – I’ve heard the phrase said in England ‘they’re on the beach’

So preparing for them is a little tricky because they do different things in different phases of the match.

I asked that internally with our coaching staff and we said are we over motivating?

Biggest game in years?

I haven’t been here so it’s hard for me to reflect on that. I watched the documentary before I came
------
I pity the players.

I'm trying to figure myself out. How can I still hope that we will pull off a convincing win away at Brighton? I'm not talking about scraping by and parking the bus.

I understand the Bielsa era has unrealistically raised our expectation levels. But nothing could have prepared us for the auto-imploding headlesschickenball served up under Marsch. Yes, he had a very tough brief, the toughest imaginable - but he is blowing it in spectacular style, it seems to me.

Sickening disappointment.

I keep going back to the fact that he's working with a group of players who have been brilliantly and meticulously coached to play one system for three plus
years. So much so they could perform in their sleep.

Now, under massive pressure Marsch is asking them to
transition to a new system. And you can see in their
play that they 'stop start' in the flow of a game. They
look confused. Understandable.

After hearing from Don yesterday I'm more inclined to
give Marsch the summer. He clearly needs players
who can play his system (they're out there). And time
to instill his system into those players that stay.

I know he rubs quite a few the wrong way. However,
it's highly likely the club backs him fully. I'm willing
to give him the benefit and give him a chance beyond
this cauldron of a season. Whether we stay up or drop.

It is our biggest game in years. When was the last time we played in a game that dictated whether we get relegated from the Premier league.....

The football under Marsch has been dire, but these aren't his players and I can't see how anyone could get mych more out of a team of championship/league 1 players against Man C, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Look he may be a terrible manager out of his depth. But the fact he talks too much for most people’s taste or that his side can’t string a pass together after 2 months really isn’t an accurate indicator under the circumstances he walked into.

Eddie Howe, first 10 games at Newcastle 8 points. The 11th game they were garbage at Elland road and we gifted them the points. That along with a transfer window and their form picked up.

Marsch first 10 games 11 points.

Unfortunately there isn’t a transfer window to help us! Newcastle signed some decent players, who made a difference, in January - Trippier, for example, played well against us and didn’t let Harrison have a sniff. The game before Harrison had scored a hat-trick against West Ham (I think it was WH).

I still blame the transfer windows’ inactivity for the position we are in.

So Jonty, I think we’ve all established he has a slack jaw and also that you’re not a fan. But it seems we’re dissecting every word now in an attempt to ridicule.
He’s saying
- Brighton definitely won’t be on the beach.
- Brighton mix things up a lot so they’re not easy to prepare for
- as a coaching team they’re self-analytical and reflect on what they see on the pitch and ask themselves what they can do better.
- biggest game…yeh not a coherent answer to a stupid question

Not much in there, unless you’re looking for it in my view.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its not about ridicule, but highlighting his style of communication, which I personally dont think will work for players and doesnt seem to be working with most fans.

Bielsa watched every minute of every match including pre season before the interview and even had the blueprints for Thorp Arch.

Jesse's watched an Amazon series on us.

You can see how he works, it’s all motivational. Players coming out chasing around like headless chickens and putting in overly aggressive tackles.

It’ll only wash for so long before players lose confidence in him and we’re already way past that point, so what now? I can’t see anything in his tactics.

What was the point of sacking Bielsa, to bring in an inferior coach? As good a business as the Dan James deal. Clueless

Good point, Jonty. Have a look at what Mike Jackson says about Burnley:
'You try and work as hard as you can, you try and do the best that you can, and I think that's all that anyone can ever ask of you.

'That's what we've tried to do here, we ask that of the players and the staff, and if you keep working along those lines of what we're about – the hard work to even compete at this level – that's the main thing.

'The players have really worked hard over the last few weeks, not just physically, it's the mental side of it as well. In the last few weeks, they've been through a lot but that brings them closer together, it brings the whole place together.'

This is clear-minded unfussy positivity. He knows what he's got, he understands the challenge facing the team, and he trusts his players.
The only ray of hope for us is that he did get Manager of the Month for April. Kiss of death for many a manager better than Mike Jackson.

I’ve no idea what they think of him… and we Brits are a cynical bunch with an acute bullsh*t radar, so I’m not providing this as evidence against just as balance:

Erring haarland: “Jesse and I had a great relationship. We still talk on the phone sometimes. He was an amazing manager for me, and we had some great memories together. He’s an amazing guy.

Fabrizio Romano:
‘from the players’ side, I have very good feedback on Marsch, they love his approach, love his ideas and love his methods’

As an aside the Romano interview that’s taken from is interesting - romano was worried about the JM’s appointment as he said the ‘criticism’ of him is it can take time for him to get his ideas across - and Leeds didn’t have time. The problem he had at Leipzig was turning a possession based side into a high energy, high press team.
