NI Protocol - what’s the beef, people?

I’m very confused about this NI Protocol malarkey. Can someone help me out, please?

Why are the govt wanting to renegotiate it when Boris says it’s actually a great agreement?

“[It’s] a good arrangement… with the minimum possible bureaucratic consequences" (19/10/2019)

I mean, the man who is our Prime Minister said that in the House of Commons, so it must be true. Plus, some silly people seem to be suggesting that it has created some kind of political division between GB and NI, but that can’t be true either.

“There will be no border down the Irish Sea… over my dead body" (13/10/2020)

As far as I am aware, Boris is still alive and well, so that must be fake news, too. In reality, of course, all of this talk of goods checks and paperwork is bluster; there’s actually none to do.

“There will be no checks on goods going from GB to NI, or NI to GB" (8/12/2019)

“If somebody asks to do that, tell them to ring up the prime minister and I will direct them to throw that form in the bin" (8/11/2019)

So that’s that myth busted. And a threat to the Good Friday Agreement, I mean, come on people… Boris has explained all of this already.

“It is fully compatible with the Good Friday agreement" (19/10/2019)

So in summary, the deal is great, there’s no Irish Sea border, there are no checks happening, there’s no new paperwork to do, and the Protocol is fully GFA compatible.

So what have I missed here? What’s the actual issue?

We should just give northern ireland back. Its not even part of the mainland
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not anyone's to give back. Northern Ireland can only join the Republic of Ireland if the majority of the electorate vote for it. And the secretary of state can only call a border poll when it appears likely that the majority would vote for departition. As it stands only about a 1/3rd would vote for a united Ireland and that number drops when higher taxes and no NHS/paying for health care is thrown in to the mix
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not even bringing the pension argument out yet... Which will be a clincher for anyone who has 30 plus years of working

----------------------------------------------------------------------
They’d be transferable at the UK rate and payable by the UK via the Republic most likely, no?

I’ll receive a full UK state pension for the years I worked in the UK courtesy of the exchequer when I retire in Portugal, for example. And I’d have thought it’d be the same if NI were to join the Republic.

Or have I missed something?

Think it's just going to be a statement TBAB as the government know full well unilaterally disapplying elements of the NIP will be met with 'rebalancing' from the EU.

Essentially threatening to invoke a16 without doing so.

Shambles, buddy.

Not thought through, or rushed through .....back before December 2019 GE, by Boris seeking to get his brexit done before the election, and helied to dup and unionists who were Duped, but to get brexit signed off, he knew he was creating a problem with the nip, but either republicans or unionists were going to be shafted.

Perhaps, the plan was to ignore or tweak the protocol all along??.

Definitely.

The various impact assessments, (including parliament and committee, as well as private sector) all highlighted the impediments, (border control posts, export heath declarations etc) brought about by Johnson’s Brexit, which the NIP sought to mitigate.

Ed Milliband tore Johnson to shreds on this in parliament in 2020, yet they still behave like no-one saw it coming
