Really, he makes it up as he goes.
Too bad Labour are pathetic, any decent opposition party would have taken these mugs to cleaners a long time ago.
I thought a 'Backstop' was a cricket fielding position until Brexit came along.

Boris <applause.
Treating people like the sheep that they are.
In a nutshell, the NI protocol means NI remains in the EU for certain things and as such is subject to their rules and regulations, which among other things is hampering trade from GB in to NI. When the govt cut tax/duty on fuel, this wasnt applied in NI because the EU don't allow it. Businesses sending goods to NI face piles and piles of paper work to get goods in to NI. If I buy a pair of jeans from River Island, RI have to fill out export declarations even though the jeans are remaining in the UK. Some retailers have stopped shipping to NI as a result.
The unionist/loyalist community see the protocol as cutting them apart from the UK and forcing an economic United Ireland and paving the way for departition.
Last year the EU wanted to block Covid vaccines from being sent to NI from GB citing the protocol, officials want checks on luggage for passengers departing ferries at NI ports. A farmer from NI can take his does to an agricultural show in England but to bring them home that farmer would face a mountain of paperwork for each cow.
Currently as it stands the protocol.hssnt been fully implemented, we are still in the grace periods that mean the checks are more relaxed. Once these grace periods end, the checks become more through and cumbersome. For example, a preprepared Bolognese that has pork and beef mince will be required to have a raft of paper work showing where the pork meat came from, and a separate raft of paperwork for the beef mince. For each individual ready meal. Every time Tesco or Asda or M&S send a delivery over the Irish sea. That consignment of ready meals will also not be allowed to be sent in a container that has other ready meals in it. So the Bolognese cant be packed with lasagna, veggie Bolognese, chili, chicken tikka masala. They would all have to be in their own separate shipments. So that's 5 separate trailers/lorries
Also re the threat to the good Friday agreement. I live in an area that would be classed as loyalist. In the last year we have had multiple instances of public disorder, there have been threats to staff working in the protocol check points and there are regular protests...there is a simmering tension. One of the mechanisms of the GFA is the principle of consent and the requirement for cross community support. In the recent assembly election, not one of the Unionist MLAs who stood for election or who were elected support the protocol so there is no cross community support meaning no consent

Spot on, as unionists and alliance, who also are not fighting for a border poll or United Ireland, make up at least 60 per cent of the vote, whole SF got 29 per cent and SDLP about 11 per cent.
The middle ground vote for alliance doubled and was the real story, imo...dup hard-line went TUV so lost about 50k votes to Jim Allister.
From GFA time 98 the nationalist vote has peaked around 40 per cent and SF haveetelt consifatrd their dominance over the SDLP, who like moderate UUP, lost votes to alliance.

The British border in Northern Ireland- Republic Ireland was done away with with an agreement called the good Friday agreement which was unilaterally agreed by the us , the British government and the Irish.....which put an end to loyalist republican violence ....
We have had peace on our island ....and because we were all EU citizens ..there were no need for checks or a border infrastructure for the island ....
But because the right wing disgusting tory party championed for brexit.....
Now there is a massive border issue from donegal to louth that now presents a serious problem because you can't have a non EU and EU border without checks ..
But we can't have a hard border because the signed sealed good Friday agreement .....
That's why there a ni protocol to put a border in the Irish till we figure out what the fykkk we can do ..and stop a return to the violence that is on the way for our island ..
You brexit supporting simpletons cheering " we want our sovereignty back..our borders back"
But that's sending Ireland towards trouble ....
Hope that makes sense
Oh and I forgot to say...

Roughly 40 per cent of unionists voted remain, but as part of the UK, we have to acknowledge and accept the leave vote, just as we have to accept the SF vote or whoever wins in Dublin or Washington.
Boris lied to unionists and loyalists about the sea border and as the GFA respects both nationalist and unionist constitutional concerns and rights, one could argue that Boris and the EU rushed their brexit protocol deal through, without taking on board the problems waiting down the line.
Eurosceptic opinion is not confined to Tories or the right, btw and nor is it UK centralised, as we see in Poland, France, Hungary etc.
The EU and UK sides could have sorted things out without a binary in or out Dave Cameron referendum, but let's not pretend brussells and the EU are some utopia here, or millions across Europe would not disagree with their rules.
Would you agree a border between GB and NI creates the same hassle a border would at Newry?
I think Leo said as much, before the protocol.

Yes, dup were bribed and lied to by Boris, but that is modern politics and power for you....Dublin politics has been no better from before and after Haughey.
Then if you look at the republican movement and SF finances π

For the record, I voted uup, as the dup and TUV are too negative and nasty.
By doing so, I and others knew SF would be top dogs and get headlines.
Business leaders want the protocol tweaked, so it's not some loons wanting war here, btw.

I think the EU quite like ireland, but old historic animosity between England and France or Germany were at play, among the big boys.
As I posted, I would be a canny loyalist-proddy and play the long game, work the protocol with tweaks that NI business leaders request, And i trust Boris and London as much as I trust SF backing Rangers this week, bud π

Republic benefitted from EU membership massively, being a net receiver, whereas, UK were paying out more than getting back, so irish EU membership is a no trainer.
Republic struggled after leaving the British fold and took off with EU funding and US investment, so you'd be mad To go independent.
Protesting against the protocol may not impact northern protestant livelihoods and jobs as much as a united ireland....tbh
How do you pay for our jobs, public sector, NHS, pensions, security etc and then one million odd loons in a united Ireland with loyalist violence?
A much more relevant and complex query than protocol protests, imo.

I'm happy with EU membership buddy ...
And one of the main reasons I am i can travel freely ...and also the EU funding that has helped Irish infrastructure.... ..
I look at the northern Irish protestants rallying currently against it...my question is ..do themselves people blindly not have a notion of how this is gonna effect jobs and livelihoods ....
I can't answer your question about the positive negative effects of what Leo v said ..I dunno...
Why has EU membership suddenly become like a terrible despicable thing

I think the EU quite like ireland, but old historic animosity between England and France or Germany were at play, among the big boys.
As I posted, I would be a canny loyalist-proddy and play the long game, work the protocol with tweaks that NI business leaders request, And i trust Boris and London as much as I trust SF backing Rangers this week, bud π

I can travel freely too.
