Respecting other cultures who commit human rights atrocities, that put LGBT people to death and allows the deaths of 6,500 migrant workers who built the stadiums for this farce of a World Cup? I don’t think so.
Shame on you Hugo, and shame on both David Beckham and Gary Neville for accepting the Qatari silver.
Weak From Hugo.

I dont think anyone should ever feel pressured into representing a community. Would you feel differently if at your workplace every few months you were TOLD you have to wear a certain armband to represent a different group. Lets stop forcing football players into politics. They just want to play football, as im sure you just want to go into work and do your job.

If you can’t speak out for the LGBT community, speak out for the families of the 8,500 migrant workers who died building the stadiums you’re going to spend the next four weeks swanning around in.

Dunno how he thinks footballers are somehow not involved in politics.

Im just saying, its easy to sit back and criticise, until youre the one feeling forced to push a message, even if its a good one. Being expected go to another country and protest against their laws is unreasonable, maybe you just want to play football. Maybe if it were me i would wear the armband, but im not gonna judge anyone who chooses not to. If tomorrow your work starts saying you have to wear this or that and represent this or that cause, might you feel differently?

I think there’s a difference between not speaking up/having a political opinion and actively making decisions (like Hugo has done) that are absolving Qatar of any blame.
I don’t blame footballers for not being a martyr, but actively helping a regime doesn’t sit well.

Hugo, Beckham and Neville respect and work for the west, so why not respect Qatar as well? It's not like the Qataris are worse than the west is it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ask the families of the 6500 dead migrant workers or the gay folk they’ve tortured and killed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair enough, but what about the hundreds of thousands killed directly or indirectly by the west?
What about the millions of displaced men, women and children forced to become refugees and all sorts of sheet.
It's terrible what they've done to those workers, and should have had the world cup taken from them for that reason, but let's not get hypocritical and carried away.
Qatar has never invaded anyone so as to steal or control natural wealth, never stole anyone's wealth or anything like that, never lied about terrorists or WMDs etc. Their despicable actions, which I condemn, are kept within their borders. Now the whole world can't afford a gallon of oil and sheet and poverty just a blow everyone's minds. Anyone that has ever tried to break away from the dollar economy is soon found sleeping with the fishes or removed and killed in a brutal coup.
Both are evil entities, but this is classic case of pot calling kettle black here.

Justify it to yourself however you want, God forbid anything get in the way of your sporting enjoyment, even if thousands of people had to die just to get the stadia built.

You've said "god forbid anything get in the way of your sporting enjoyment" when they commented saying the world cup should be removed from qatar for that reason...silly post

I don't think anybody disagrees with you regarding on how tragic and horrendous some of the things have been getting here. Right from the start the whole thing stunk. But the point from Hugo is that he will observe the rules and laws of the country that he is in. He will respect that and that is fine if you ask me.
Fact is that Qatar is a sovereign country with their own rules, morals and laws. I don't think it is within Hugo's jurisdiction as a football player to do otherwise. And if there is a player that does want to make a statement, they can. But they should be wary of the consequences.
I am sure that they will take caution from that WMBA basket ball player that brought weed into Russia and got a decade or so in prison. People need to educuate themselves and remember that the rules of the west are generally the exception in the world, not the rule!
