Hugo is saying this as he's French. If he were to say anything, it would shine a lot on the atrocities and the discrimination that the French carry out in their own nation and still in Africa.
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/11/8/islamophobia-qataris-decry-french-cartoon-of-football-team
Things like this are might be some of the things Hugo and other French players might be asked about if they were to start standing up for migrants in Qatar (Calais could be brought up) or racism being acceptable in higher level of politics and the media there.

I mean, if you haven't kept up with what France has been doing, it's no wonder Hugo isn't saying stuff in Qatar.
It's not his job to get involved in their countries laws etc..he's just there to play football, you can't force these players to do things that politicians should be doing, it's not fair.

He has a platform and he should be using it. It’s pure cowardice not to.
That certain James cleverly was saying England fans should be respectful of the Qatar culture.
Respect a culture that has the potential death penalty for being Gay? Are you sure you utter shameful excuse for a human being?
F a ck this World Cup and fack Tory oxygen thiefs.
Would someone kindly explain to me what not wearing the rainbow armband means?
What is this damned rainbow armband?

It’s not about the armband, it’s about calling out human rights abuses.

I'm guessing he was asked a question and he answered it. What can he do when half the world believes something and the other half feel completely opposite?
I'm starting to get a bit bored of this view footballers have to take a stand in Qatar.
Obviously Qatar is a morally bankrupt state with some outdated laws and treatment of workers. But the decision to play there was taken by the corrupt cants at Fifa.
I find the media coverage a bit OTT. If we were playing in the US would people talk about boycotting the states where abortion is illegal because Imo that is just as backwards as not allowing same s*x relationships. Or wear Black armbands for all the Iraqi's unnecessarily killed in illegal wars?
I'm at the stage where I'm just going to watch and enjoy the world cup now.

I agree with Lloris tbh, its not his job and this whole fake outcry against Qatar is absolute bs. If politicians and society cared that much, they would have made far more noise 10 years ago. Even a year ago. They have literally waited until a couple weeks before the event starts

The fact that it was always going to be impossible to get a country to change its laws, cultures, traditions etc for the sake of a month football tournament, it could be seen as 'fake'.
I'm just bored of footballers/pundits etc who are going out there justifying it by shining they'll use the opportunity to 'shine a light' on the issues. No you won't. You're going there because you get paid lots to do so. Just be open about that.
