It’s really something I don’t get one bit.
I feel like people apply the ‘logic’ they have to international managers that they think is the same as for club managers.
We have had supposedly world class managers manage the England team, with on paper far better squads. Yet GS has got England to the WC semis, EC final and now a WC QF in back to back tournaments.
In my recent memory yesterday was arguably our best loss. We were the better team but all that matters are goals.
He’s avoided the stupid drama and such that have often derailed and sensationalized our struggles at international tournaments.
Southgate Hate

Knock out wins under Gareth:
Ukraine, Sweden, Denmark, Colombia, Senegal and the worst German team for 40 years.
Lost to Croatia, Italy and now France.
He doesn't get the job done when it truly counts. The three best teams he's faced on paper in knock out football and we haven't won any of them.
Time is up. He's a nice guy but he's not a winner, never has been and never will be. Going into the Euros with him is just another wasted opportunity with a talented group of players. We know we won't win it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This really sums it up.
It would have been a shock to lose to any of those teams bar the German one, and England on paper were better than all three of those teams we lost to arguably.
Yet Southgate gets praised for his great work?
--------------------------------------------------------
When you take over a team that had reached one quarter final in it's previous five tournaments available, and the last of which were knocked out by a country once population is a fraction of London's - why is getting praised for dragging them out of that abyss unreasonable?

I don't disagree with people who are saying England can't beat the teams they'd be considered to be the underdogs against, but that's an England problem, not a Southgate problem!
What Southgate has done is get us back to the Eriksson standard, with a less talented selection pool to pick from imo, and every tournament there's been progression whereas with Eriksson it seemed to go in the other direction. Wouldn't surprised if at Euro 2024, even if it's in the group, we do beat a big team (deservedly) because that appears to be the nature of Southgate's England. There's comfort that comes out of each tournament.

England just got relegated in the nations league, failed to beat USA, lost to France and only beat Senegal, Iran and Wales... you could definately argue they aren't progressing.

What have you seen in the last year which says the senior team is progressing?
Reminds me of a similar arguments I was having when Ole was in charge at United, people giving the nice guy the benefit of the doubt, despite zero CV, and losing when it matters.

Again not Southgate problems, England problems!
The last time we played a team in a tournament who'd be considered better than us and we actually had the courage to attack (not even played better or worst, just had them on the backfoot for at least half of the match) to my mind was Brazil in the 2002 WC. That was 20 years ago mate, you're damn right that's progress
There needs to be a realization of what England are & where they were before Southgate. We're like the Spurs of International Football, I don't care how many supposed world class players with have - we're bottlers. That's who we are, that's our history. And you only need to look at Spurs' recent history to see swapping out a manager who's perceived as a loser for one with the CV might not necessarily work. While it's good, while everyone seems to be happy playing for him, why change it?

Because in my opinion, the England performances over the last year haven't been good, largely poor. It would have took terrible performances not to get to the quarters of this tournament. We then play France, decent performance against them but lose.
You may be right in that not many England managers have done better over the last 20 years and there seems a decent feel good factor around the team, so maybe exits when England face good teams should be accepted as good enough. Who knows.

Do you really take anything outside of tournament performance as relevant? The amount of times England have looked great going into them only to flop has been enraging, Southgate's England don't embarrass themselves at tournaments regardless of form, that's incredibly refreshing.
Looking like we belong on the same pitch as the good teams is good enough (to me). When it comes down to fine margins in International Football you've done well as you don't get large quantities of time with the players.
