Even I'm gonna have to say it. Messi is the GOAT. For me it's all about what trophies you win. Generally speaking for most it's the World Cup then it's the Champs League then it's your domestic league. Messi now has them all! Congratulations to him and all of Argentina

Grumpy old man romanticises the past, who’s have thought. Like I said earlier, I prefer Maradona, I love his character and passion but Messi is the greatest. The level he achieved for the duration is unrivalled.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pele won three world cups over a period of four tournaments and 12 years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And....?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tbf Pele actually only really won 2 WCs.
He got injured in the 1st game in 62 and missed the whole tournament after that.
Pele is only really World Champ for 58 and 70.

have to laugh at the xbox generation when everything in their lifetime is the greatest of all time even though they didn't ever see the others

These people really are morons.

Yeah, had forgotten that but it is true, he didn't have anything to do with that world cup win..

It is all down to personal opinion and what you enjoy.
I have always preferred to watch Messi over Ronaldo. I preferred watching Maradona and before him Cruyff and before him the Best.

Only deluded people will claim Pele or Maradona is better than Messi & C.Ronaldo.
……
Or people who actually saw them play.

No point comparing players from different eras.
You could say that Messi, if he played in 1960, would never be a pro footballer because medicine wasn't advanced, so he'd be forever be 3 foot tall.
Or, Ronaldo, has pushed himself so far because of the readily available modern technology, diets, gyms, and geniuses pampering to his every need, that they definitely did not have back then.
Players back then were drinking, smoking, eating poorly, it wasn't strict like today.
You also watched defenders and midfielders literally attempt to injure these guys, Maradona, pele, best, dozens of times a game. Could Messi or Ronaldo deal with the sheer physicality of those times?
Not to mention to dogsh!t football boots they wore that were about 10kg in weight.
Or the footballs that were like bowling balls.
Don't forget the pitches, were like playing in Sunday league. Waterlogged, wrecked, uncared for.
Could Messi and Ronaldo handle that?
You could also swing it the other way, would the old players be able to handle the strict routines of today, who knows.
Either way, I'm just glad to be alive to watch both Messi and Ronaldo live throughput their entire careers.
Fyi George Best is the goat.

Best is (one of) the best I've seen too.
But in the context of winning World Cups (single handedly like Maradona did or as the talisman of part of a good team like Messi did yesterday) unless you are born in a country that can win one in the first place, you will never be considered.

Argies in 86 were better than this argie side. And Maradona didn't even score in the final while 'single handedly' carrying Argentina to the title whereas Messi hit the back of the net three times yesterday while not 'single handedly' carrying Argentina to the title.
