The Torch has been passed

The Kylian Mbappe era is upon us.

My word what a player this boy is!

Watching him throughout this world cup and especially last night in the final , I think it's fair to say that Messi and Ronaldo are leaving the game in good hands with Mbappe.

He literally carried that France team on his own last night against Argentina because for some reason Griezman , Giroud and Dembele all decided not to show up at all.

Yes France lost of course but Mbappe has definitely left a lasting memory with his performance last night , single handedly dragging his team back into the match in the last minutes.

A hat trick in the world cup final ffs! and the top scorer in the tournament as well with 8 goals.

Back to back world cup final for him already at his young age , he's won one and lost the other ... And he's yet to even celebrate his 24th birthday.

And I believe he's the top scorer in the CL so far this season and top scorer in the league in France as well.

It's really between him and Haaland as to the next big stars in football.
While Haaland is probably a better finisher , there's no question that Mbappe is the better footballer overall.

And he's clearly not a bad finisher himself either as the Golden Boot in the 2022 World Cup will show ...

With Ronaldo apparently going to Saudi Arabia and Messi reportedly to join the retirement home known as the MLS at the end of his contract with PSG , I think the Kylian Mbappe era is about to take over.

Am I the only one who thought he wasn't that great in most games and plays in spurts? Done nothing v england and nothing for 80 mins in the final except keep overunning it.

Maybe but he seems to be a big game player and the occasion doesn't phase him. That's rare.
England's problem was they showed him too much respect.

i was only talkng about the final but I agree. For 80mins he was rotten. didnt beat his men, didnt get on the ball enough, didnt press at all, didnt try and stretch the back line, didnt get any efforts on goal.

then scored a pen, produced a world class finish and then anther penalty. his 10 min cameo meant that he overall had a decent game, but he didnt carry france (cos france were getting pumped no one was carrying them) he and Dembele were having mares in fact. doing absolutely nothing to influence the game.

He didnt dominate the game, didnt carry france, he produced when it mattered which is ultimately all that matters.

But this notion of he had a great game and is the complete package .... na not for me.

yeah pretty good summary.
He scores goals and gets on the end of things. But in terms of controlling games like messi or even to a lesser extent carrying a team forward like ronaldo did at utd and early madrid, he's got a lot to improve on.

He's probably as impactful in the box but tahts about it.

people are saying he is a forward he didnt get service... na he was played out on the wing for the majority of the match. His lack of press and runs made it easier for the Argies to play from the back and consistently find Messi.

The game changed when France changed it up and brought on two wingers that pressed, and drove with energy and moved Mbappe up top

Mbappe and the french side were outclassed for 80 minutes but credit where it is due, when the moments came he was still ready.
======
Why do you highlight Mbappe where France failed but don't do the opposite where they succeeded? That game was 120+ minutes so by your logic Mbappe and France outclassed Argies for 40 minutes? Football is a team game played to the final whistle. A goal is a goal in the first or last minute. Its what you cumulatively end up doing that counts.

Mbappe was top scorer at the world cup and you're cherry picking some minutes where he didn't do much. This is some serious mental gymnastics you're pulling off IMO. It's almost like you're jealous. Did Pele play at the top of his game in every single game during the '58 world cup? What about the other world cups Brazil didn't win? I guess it was because Pele didn't press which allowed his team to concede easy goals and get knocked out. I guess Pele wasn't so good after all because he went missing in some games.

Good player but won't ever be at the Messi/Ronaldo level given what I have seen so far.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not likely that he will reach those levels but it's not impossible going by what I've seen so far. What we can say with some certainty however, is that at this point in time him and Haaland are clearly the ones that will be occupying those spaces as the next best players outside of Messi and Ronaldo. Remains to be seen if that will ever change and how far they can go.

And this is the sticking point really. There might be a few that can and have reached Messi and Ronaldo levels. But can they sustain that level year in year out for 15 years? Its possible, but in order to do so, they not only have to be fairly lucky with injuries, but also have to maintain their focus and desire.
