Hogwarts Legacy

What’s up, guys?

Best advice I’ll give you this year: GET THIS GAME.

It is absolutely incredible; I’m so, so thoroughly impressed. I can’t believe it isn’t getting 10s across the board (we all know why that is, and it’s nothing to do with gaming).

Playing on PS5 and the graphics might be the best I’ve seen in terms of the landscape and world. There are certain games that have just made me stop and look around: RDR2, Ghost of Tsushima, Bloodborne/Dark Souls (though, that’s more for the style than pure beauty) and this is certainly one of them.

The world is HUGE and filled with things to do; so in-depth and true to the lore.

Flying is awesome and really compliments the detail of the world and graphics.

Combat is very enjoyable - okay, it was never going to be FromSoft/ God of War levels of combat, but it’s still great and p!shes on that of any other open world game I’ve played, other than Elden Ring.

Best compliment I can pay this game: I paid £70 for the privilege and will them to make as much DLC as they want, because I’ll buy it!!

I grew up with the books, so I am probably a little bias, but I expected an EA-style movie game cash grab and I couldn’t have been more wrong, happily!

Biggest criticism is them trying to shoehorn in as much inclusivity and diversity as possible (again, we know why). It’s set in 19th Century England, it’s historically accurate to have a large majority of white British; we don’t need to have every character represent a particular ethnic group and don’t get me started on the transgender witch…

From what I’ve seen the travelling around, scenery and worlds look brilliant, interaction and scenes with characters up close look pretty poor though. Combat looks okay. Going to pick it up just for the nostalgia of the movie world and books as a kid.

Trading in the PS4 doesn't seem a bad shout tbh. I haven't played on it in years.

Been a great play so far, it's not quite Red Dead good, but Hogwarts is incredibly well done and the combat system is one of the better ones I've played in a game. Really feel funs pinging spells around.

Recommend anyone playing/ about to play gives the below a watch - for a couple of things, I shamefully got about ten hours in, all the while none the wiser, until watching.

the game looks fantastic, great atmosphere, great representation.

The combat looks so boring, you can only use 4 spells regardless of how many you know and its literally just spamming a button.

I dont think I could deal with such limited combat

I've actually quite enjoyed the combat system. I do wish you could interact with the other students a bit more outside of quests though. Red Dead 2 came out in 2018 and they managed to add in an incredible amount of interaction with the campmates, so it's a bit of a shame they didn't try to do anything like that here.

It’s not quite like that. You have four spells (R2 + X, square, circle, triangle) per “wheel” and four spell wheels, plus your basic cast (R2), throwable objects (R1), parry (triangle alone), roll (circle alone).

You end up switching wheels mid-fight in a string of inputs to link certain spells together (for example, using levioso to suspend an enemy in mid air, followed by descendo to bring them crashing down) and, in theory, could link about 20 totally unique spells together in a giant combo.

Sure, if all you did was basic cast and dodge/parry, that would be incredibly boring.

It can be fiddly - for example, remembering which spell is saved in which spell wheel - but can be very interesting once mastered.

As I say, the combat isn’t Dark Souls, GoW, or Nioh, but is tonnes better than something like the Witcher, Skyrim, Assassin’s creed, or even final fantasy, now that they’ve ruined it.

The story and characters are god-awful, but the game itself is very good.
The combat system took a while to grow on me, but now I really like it. Will be brilliant for multiplayer too, if they add that.
