clubs as being Man City and Chelsea, and yes that is true. But one side that has gone right under the radar in the amount they spend is Arsenal. Since Season 2016/17, that`s like seven seasons back, they will have after the Rice transfer, have spent a staggering 1 billion and 14 million pounds just to finish in the top four ONCE.
For this outlay their finishes have been 2nd, 5th, 8th, 8th, 5th, 6th and 5th. Throw in the previous season 205/16, where the spent another £113 million, and their total comes to 1 billion 127 million spent in just eight seasons.
You have to ask is this really sustainable for any club. Now I know Spurs waste a lot of money for very little return, but certainly not on the scale that Arsenal waste money. Surely a club spending that much money has to be winning titles and CLs.
Some of their buys that have not exactly torn it up in the Prem
Pepe £80 million
Aibameyang £63 million
Lacazette £53 million
I suspect over time we may be adding Havertz, £60 million and Rice, £105 million to that list.
Why is it cheaper buys usually turn out to be the better buys?
We often think of the financially doped

Scoring goals was not our problem last season, we scored loads. Defending became a huge issue after saliba got injured.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your problems were all mental, as soon as you could see the finish line your players went all Spursy and City just rolled right over you.
I promise you, next season you won’t even be close with ten games to go
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You know, you don't have to project your own team's weaknesses onto us.
Yes, maybe a bit more mental fortitude could have helped, but the issue was largely a squad depth one. We look to be rectifying that this summer, but we shall see how it ends up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Didn't Arsenal bottle top four the season before as well. I suggest it is Arsenal that have a mental weakness, not Spurs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Same reason, lack of squad depth. However I do believe we could improve mentally too, but at a minimum we need a better squad depth which we don't have yet
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mental depth would definitely help
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How many points clear were they before they let 2-0 leads slip vs Liverpool and then West Ham and then drew at home vs bottom team Saints. Didnt even have European or cup distractions at that point !
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Before that liverpool game we were 8 points clear with City having a game in hand but with still us to play them away.
So it really wasn't much of a lead, we thought we would drop points against City, Liverpool and Newcastle.
I think if we would've lost the league that way then it wouldn't have been so bad, but the draw against West Ham and Southampton was very poor for me.
The Brighton lost was annoying too, but they are our bogey team I don't think we've beaten them at home for a long while.

Spurs fans have so much PTSD they think all it takes to win things is to be mentally resilient.
Sorry lads, when you win a big trophy, you'll understand. You have to have the right level of talent in the squad too. Rob holding is simply not good enough.
Imagine relying on a slightly better version of dav. Sanchez to win you a league. It just isn't happening.

Exactly, they were stumbling well before that - last minute winner against Bournemouth to drag themselves over the line in that game.
West Ham had them rocking, Liverpool should have beaten them and then City absolutely crushed them.
It was great watching them mentally shrink at the end - no leader taking control, calming them down, they just stopped taking selfies and bombing instagram and instead retreated back into their shells

A mentally resilient Man United won plenty with world superstars like David May, Jesper Blomqvist, Phil Neville

You could get away with that in those days, because the rest of the league were unserious alcoholics. Also, they weren't going up against a financially doped juggernaut like man city.
Like I said, you won't understand.

Sure mate.
Well done by the way, you’ve definitely won this argument, completely shown me up, I will go away and really think on the very valid and legitimate points you have made

I don’t quite understand how they got around it with the torn up contracts. Surely the amortisation + remaining wage ends up making it difficult to be FFP compliant?
Unless they happened to do it in that non-FFP covid window?

They did it comfortably within the rules in the exact same way that we could if Levy wanted to - were not hostage to any situation other than Levy

But Aubameyang (roughly) was on £300k a week (5 year contract) and cost £60m - and his contract was tore up with 18 months left.
Through amortisation they’d have left to disclose £9m of the fee and £21.6m from his wages. £31.6m is a hefty chunk of their FFP - which is why i was wondering about it
