Believe it properly once signed, but in theory another piece of the jigsaw.

I think we need a keeper, but is Darlow being targeted as first choice keeper?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably. Hoping we get Woodman or Johansson to compete with him. We lost Robbles after all.
We paid 5 mil for Meslier and will make a decent profit if.sold for 20, so id rather we spent 5 on a mid 20's keeper with sell on value.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
we got so lucky with Meslier. Casilla doesnt get banned and he would have finished loan and gone back to L'Orient
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't agree with this at all, Casilla doesn't get banned, Meslier goes back to L'orient and we end with a decent keeper instead of the train wreck that Meslier has been for the last two years.
Decent keeper inspires a bit of confidence in our back line and maybe we don't go down.

I don’t feel so lucky to have had Meslier. Over-rated by Leeds fans. There’s more to keeping than athletic saves. He was cut plenty of slack for being young. Fair enough, but reality is we needed better. He obviously lost confidence but he had one of the worst shot:saves % in the prem last year… before you start on the cross flapping and distribution. If anyone still wants our rough diamond as a prospect, we should bite their hands off.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
well, maybe if we'd have had a goalkeeping coach who had actually been a goalkeeper Meslier could have developed more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This I agree with, but maybe if the coach had known his @rse from his elbow he would have known that Meslier was a god awful keeper.
Don't need a fee for the guy, just get shot.

Ask the Newcastle supporters about Darlot.
They are not overimpressed
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d rather keep Meslier and spend elsewhere.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If we were very limited on funds, I'd agree with you Steross - I feel Meslier would easily cope at Championship level. The fact that we're splashing out on a new keeper suggests we've got more money to spend – now let's get that new striker bought!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When you say splashing out.....this is a nearly 33 year old second choice keeper whose played about 50 games in 5 years.
Surely this would be a back up signing, like Robles and more like dipping in Simon's pot, than splashing out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sulli was 34 when we signed him, Rob Green 36.
I am 61 and still like to think have a chance.
Age aint no barrier.

Sounds like a stop gap keeper who we'll sign for the Championship but will need better if we get promoted

Hard to get too excited by Darlow though. Career understudy. It’s a job a lot of keepers have to take to… but it often means they’re the ones happy taking a salary rather than proving themselves (often at a lower level). Hey it’s a box ticked if it happens.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
in fairness to Darlow, not sure he has been a career understudy. He's chosen us over Bournemouth specifically because he will get gametime. He's frequently gone out on loan to play games (Hull fans love him from last season).
Probably went to Newcastle thinking he could displace their number one and it just didn't work out. Imagine that was dubravka, who was a good keeper at the time.

Not to get controversial or anything, but, Darlow
is better than Meslier. He'll walk in the door as the
automatic number 1. Really good signing to add
to the other really good signing, Ampadu.

I always thought Meslier was overrated.
Surely nobody still believes the "France's number one for years" story any more do they?

Yeh don’t think many start out planning to be understudies it just ends up that way. He played a chunk of games in Newcastle’s promotion season and one PL season but has largely benchwarmed. Not sure he’s frequently been loaned. Hull was pretty much it. As for Bournemouth v Leeds choice… was it game time or family ties as has been reported? Maybe both.
Not a criticism, just observations… Hopefully he’s still hungry and committed and sees this is a footballing opportunity. I’ve not personally seen much of him, but he’s looked decent when I have.
