Retro players in todays money

I just saw a thing on TikTok where Gary Lineker said he was told by some inflation stats guy that he would be worth £140 million in todays money.

So in that spirit, let’s all have a discussion on what other older players would be worth in todays money. I’ll start with a couple and try to be realistic and take ages etc into account as well as not use what players they turned out to be. Just an objective figure on what people assumed they’d be at the time.

Roy Keane circa 1993 when we got him. £3.75 million. British transfer record. Today? I reckon £120 million.

Wayne Rooney circa 2004 when we got him. £27 million. Just came off a euros where he was genuinely the most exciting young talent in football. Today? I reckon £150 million.

If Ceceido is going for £110m, Rooney is going for more than £150m.

Richarlison was £60m too, so I reckon more like £3bn.
