Carlisle 0 - 2 Derby County

CARLISLE v DERBY COUNTY League 1 #8

1500 Brunton Park Saturday 23rd September 2023

A stodgy performance v Portsmouth where we could have won 3-0 or lost 4-1. Huffing and puffing but not really being clinical. At least we did not lose. And the draw didnt even feel like a loss.

A salutory lesson - lets hope we learn from it.

Carlisle lie south of the division with only one win in the league. Their last game was a hard earned point against Lincoln - don't forget that Carlisle have only been back in the league for 3 years - League 1 is a momentous achievment and this will probably be their biggest game to date.

Do we persevere with the four at the back? I'm still very conflicted about this and better brains on this thread have also expressed reservations. But it’s what PW wants to do.

Team news:- Wildsmith (GK), Forsyth (C), Cashin, Collins, Waghorn, Mendez-Laing, Smith, Sibley, Fornah, Nyambe, Nelson.

Subs:- Loach (GK), Wilson, Bradley, Barkhuizen, Washington, Elder, Robinson.

I'm pleased we didn't know anything about this until now. It's good to know that some things can remain private, even for those in the public eye. Everyone at the club must have been in the know but kept it in-house.

Just to put it on here for those who are not aware of what the tragedy was, Josh lost his wife to cancer.
RIP

Cancer has touched and messed up so many lives.

Now we know more about poor Vickers it adds a little more perspective to the way we played at Carlisle. Derby's squad must have been in a very bad place and this could account for a mixed display.

I have now had a chance to watch the first half having missed it on Saturday and really it was not as bad as many have indicated. NML in particular was a threat and both he and Collo could and maybe should have scored. So as away wins go this was pretty good overall.

An aside - I thought the idea of having multiple balls on cones was to save time and keep the game moving so why did so many players ignore the coned balls and wait for the retrieval of the original ball and why, when a Carlisle player did take a coned ball did the ref make him replace it and wait for the return of the original ball? Weird! Comments/explanations welcome.

Yes, this was very apparent and it seemed pointless having the balls available if they were not used. Apparently it is up to the ref to decide how the multiple balls are used in any game. I can’t think of any good reason why the ref always insisted on using the same ball. Perhaps there is potential for ballboys speedily returning a ball to the home team’s advantage and delaying return to the away team but the same applies if only one ball is used.

Good points Vidal but if the player about to take the throw, corner or free kick is standing near a cone he just has to take that ball himself and not rely on a ballboy.

Yes, I agree I can’t see any sense in it. There is no point in having a multiple ball system if you then insist on only using one ball. The only time a different ball was used at Carlisle was when the original was kicked out of the ground entirely. I suppose it doesn’t make an enormous difference most of the time but it’s baffling to have the other balls for decorative use only.

I guess it's the referee using his total lack of judgement as per usual. πŸ™„

When Collins scores a hattrick on Saturday I'm sure he would rather have the ball he scored all 3 with rather than a ball where he might have scored none.

Also I'm sure Spart would be thrilled.
